Why do I need to get my certificates attested?

Upon relocating to a foreign country, you need to prove to the officials of that nation that your documents are genuine and legal. The attestation of documents refers to legalizing your documents which confirm your credentials.

How to get my certificates or degrees attested?

For verification of documents in the UAE, the documents need to go through the process of authentication called embassy legalization or attestation. This process is called UAE embassy attestation or legalization.

Attestation of certificates prior to coming to Dubai:

The basic process to attest your documents prior to coming to Dubai is to:

  • Verify your documents by the Ministry or Department of Foreign Affairs in your respective country. Take the original document and a copy along with you which will be stamped to verify that the issuing authority is real and the certificate is genuine.
  • Take the document and copy of it to the UAE embassy or consulate in your respective country. The embassy will verify that the documents come from the genuine government body in your country.
  • Finally, submit attested documents or copies to the relevant government sector when you get to Dubai. It would also help to discuss the process with your company or university as they will be familiar with the attestation process and will give you the exact information.

If you are not in your home country prior to coming to Dubai and UAE, you have two choices.

  • You can take the documents to the embassy of your home country for authentication and then take the documents to the Foreign Affairs department of the country to verify that the embassy attestation is authentic. Finally, take the documents to the UAE embassy of the country for final attestation.
  • Or, you can send the documents to your home country to complete the original process.

Attestation of certificates in Dubai:
If you have to attest your documents in Dubai itself, there are two stages of attestation:

Step 1: Dubai Courts’ Notary Public (DCNP):

Go to Dubai Courts Notary Public and take a token to meet the Notary who will verify your documents. You need to take:

  • Minimum 2 original documents
  • All original supporting documents including passport/valid ID.

DCNP branches are open at Al Twar Centre in Al Qusais and Al Barsha.

Step 2: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in Bur Dubai in the Bastakiya area. Pay the fee which varies for different documents and get your documents validated.

How to get a true copy of an original document from DCNP
If you have lost an original document or need a true/certified copy, you can get a hold of one from the Dubai Courts Notary Public (DCNP) for a small fee as they always keep one original for scanning and archive purpose. The true/certified copy can be used in place of the original as it is legally accepted. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to a certified typist and get Arabic request typed, after presenting your original or copy with the DCNP sticker which has the archive number.
  2. Take your genuine document, or copy with the DCNP sticker & Arabic typed request to DCNP branch during morning hours.
  3. Verify your identity, pay the fee and obtain a printout which will be stamped with the date and DCNP “True Copy”.

In conclusion, the process of attestation may be different for every document, so it’s prudent to check with the officials concerned in advance.
