Hafodwenog School

Hafodwenog is an area school, opened in 1972 to serve the children of Alma, Bryn Iwan, Cilrhedyn, Dinas, Gelliwen, Pandy, Penybont, Talog and Trelech. The school has been planned in four units surround the school hall. Two units comprise of classrooms; Foundation Phase learning area and Junior learning area. There are a futher two units, one consisting of the staff area and the second where the Kitchen and school meals are prepared and served.

Welsh is the official language of the school. It is the only medium of instruction in the Foundation Phase. English is introduced at Key Stage 2. To fulfil the Education Authority’s bilingual policy teaching resources of a high standard are provided to ensure that pupils are able to express themselves fluently and easily, verbally and in writing, in Welsh and in English by the time they transfer to secondary education.

Children are able to begin school at the beginning of the term before they reach their fourth birthday and receive full-time education. " As a school we will endeavour to develop an exciting, learning environment with a Welsh, nurturing ethos for the whole school community, in order to develop children's self belief and self respect, ensuring that opportunities are provided for every individual to reach their full potential."

The Foundation Phase for children aged 4 - 7yrs. This class is taught by Mrs Enfys John and Mrs Anwen Thomas with support from Mrs Helen Bowen, Mrs Catrin Brain and Mrs Wendy Thomas. The Foundation Phase is implemented within schools in Wales for children from ages 3-7 years old. This new exciting curriculum was introduced into Nursery and Reception classes back in September, 2008. By September 2011, all classes from Nursery up to Year 2 have implemented the Foundation Phase framework. The education which is offered within the Foundation Phase is totally committed to the child’s holistic development – the child is central to the learning. Junior Class [KS2] for children aged 7 - 11yrs. This class is taught by Mr Cennydd Dafis with support from Miss Meleri Siôn.
