The University seeks to achieve three chief objectives; firstly, to grow up excellent clinicians and highly creative researchers; secondly, to promote original researches and the innovation of medical techniques; and thirdly, to play a leading role in local medical treatments by practicing medicine for the greatest benefits of patients. These goals should contribute to the health and welfare of all mankind.

The main task of the university is to actively promote the mankind's health, happiness and prosperity through its educational and academic activities. The school, which serves as an educational and research institution for medicine and nursing, aims at teaching and researches on the newest theories and practical applications of them. The school continuously seeks to grow up expert clinicians and nurses and their researchers who are not only highly academic and skilled but also well trained and versed in medical ethics. By doing so, the university plays a leading role in local medicine and health care and helps them develop.

During the past 14 years, under the management of the National University Corporation, we have maintained healthy finances and intensively put resources into research, mainly our medical photonics project. We have also trained excellent doctors and nurses, who are contributing to local medical care. Moreover, we can boast of the high number of our successful applicants in the National Examination for Medical Practitioners. Our university has continued original research and formed industry-university collaborations with local companies. Building on those achievements, we are now in the process of reforming our organization through strengthening our institutional research.

In anticipation of University Entrance Exam Reforms by the Japanese Government, we are shifting our entrance exam process away from emphasis on mere book learning to the intelligence and suitable personality of applicants. In education, we are proceeding with a new diploma policy to upgrade education quality. It will focus on cultivating students who can analyze and solve problems with ethical values as a medical professional, with excellent communication abilities and international perspectives.

Since medical professions should have practical English skills, all undergraduate students will have multiple opportunities to take TOEIC as a motivation to study English and broaden their ability.

We are reinforcing our Clinical Education Center established in compliance with a new regime that started this April for training and certifying medical specialists. Our Women Doctor Support Center is expanding its function and importance. This year, the Departments of Perioperative Functioning Care & Support and Regional Medical Care Support were established using donations in the School of Medicine. We also place stress on developing specialist certified nurse as well as medical specialist.

Our university has had a long association with Medical Photonics, which has become increasingly important in modern medical care, and we are continuously making efforts in research and development. The recently established Preeminent Medical Photonics Education & Research Center aggregates a variety of imaging technologies and human resources with skills we have developed and promotes our medical care and medical research in both basic and clinical areas. We have all the functions to develop deeper industry-university collaborations with local companies and associated human resources. Furthermore, this year, we started strengthening highly specialized human resource development in Medical Photonics with the establishment of the Cooperative Major in Medical Photonics, Doctoral course in our Graduate School of Medicine & Nursing.

It is also praiseworthy that our University Hospital consistently provides advanced and competent medical treatment under safe and stable medical management with an increasing the number of young and energetic professors who perform the latest medical treatments.

To realize our goal of a "society of health and longevity" with preventive medicine and a regular medical examination system, we are promoting the necessary frameworks and research seeds with the aid of various kinds of database. In addition, another of our main missions is to be a reliable disaster center hospital.

All University staff are focused on working as a team based on our University's vision. I hope to build an organization in which staff members are united in their efforts to do their part and promote the continual growth of Hamamatsu University School of Medicine.
