Highgate House School

Highgate House School was established in 1992 in Repulse Bay for the founders’ own children. In 2001, Julie Lam, a founder member, brought the philosophy of Steiner Waldorf education to Hong Kong by introducing some of the basic principles into the school and with additional groups for younger children. Following the set up of a teacher training programme, the International Kindergarten Association accredited the school as a Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten in 2003.

There is a recognized need amongst child development experts for pre school education to provide a more age appropriate curriculum. Children today, particularly in major cities, can be pushed too far beyond their capabilities and this adversely affects healthy development. Stress is often expressed through social and emotional difficulties that halt effective learning. It is a case of “Too Much, Too Soon!” *. On the other hand, research shows that children with well developed social and emotional skills are able to learn better in all areas and this is the key to a happier and more successful life.

At Highgate House our priority is to emphasise caring and authentic relationships between child, teacher and parent using a curriculum that nurtures healthy all round development. A child’s first experience of school affects a life time approach to learning and education and it is vitally important that we ensure this first experience is positive, enriching and joyful. This was the main aim when starting the school for the founders own children in 1992.

For the family, we provide the time and space to be supported with relevant information and the latest insights on early childhood development. We encourage a sharing and exchange of ideas to help integrate the child’s first experience of education as a natural progression from home. Highgate House provides the stable bridge from home to the more formal environment of primary school.

Located on the Peak with open views of the mountains and sea we provide a retreat away from the city bustle with easy safe access. The classrooms are exceptionally spacious to allow children freedom of movement in their activities. We have a unique 2000+sq ft garden area specially designed with sandpit, water play, wooden climbing equipment, gardening and rabbit area providing children with daily outdoor activities.

Gardening is introduced from an early age, with the children helping to grow produce that can be used in soups or seasonal dishes. Children have all weather clothing and footwear in school so that we can enjoy the natural elements in all seasons. Children naturally love to splash in puddles or run free on a windy day, reveling in the experience of being outside and connected with nature.

We work with the inspiration of Dr. Rudolf Steiner and Dr. Emmi Pikler. The curriculum respects the essential nature of childhood, enabling children to develop their strengths in an environment carefully thought out according to their needs. In the early years, a home like environment is the most appropriate way to encourage learning. Strong foundations for academics and the developing intellect are formed through movement and exploration, creative, artistic, and practical hands on activities.
