Swiss International Boarding School – The Hochalpines Institut Ftan (HIF) is a Swiss International School and Sports Academy founded in 1793 and guided by the humanitarian traditions of Switzerland and the values of the great Swiss educators. HIF is an international boarding school with a strong local identity. It is attended by students from the local region of the Lower Engadine and by boarding students from Switzerland and around the world. It is located above the village of Ftan (altitude: 1648 metres asl) in a beautiful alpine setting in south-eastern Switzerland. The region borders on Italy and Austria. The local community comprises the village of Ftan (population 500), the nearby town of Scuol (population 2,500) and other villages in the region of the Lower Engadine.
HIF has chosen some of the world’s leading programmes of study recognised for admission by the top universities in the USA, the UK, Switzerland and worldwide. A knowledge-rich and skill-based curriculum promotes mastery of subject content in Languages, Mathematics, the Natural Sciences, the Humanities, the Arts, Sport as well as classes which focus on issues facing societies and individuals across the globe.
Sport is an essential element in HIF education. It promotes health, well-being, resilience, self-discipline and team spirit. What is more, sport is a source of joy, excitement and inspiration. For over 30 years, HIF has been not only one of Switzerland’s leading sports schools with a proud tradition in training elite athletes who participated with great success in the Olympic Winter Games but also a certified Swiss-Ski performance center in disciplines such as cross-country skiing, biathlon, alpine skiing and snowboard freestyle. With state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated team of professional coaches and staff, the HIF Sports Academy strives to provide every athlete the opportunity to utilize their full potential. The colleagues are super nice, there is a really pleasant atmosphere. The understanding for each other and the willingness to cooperate are great. The teachers and coaches work together with the pupils in a respectful way. The technical equipment is of a very high standard in all areas (school, administration, Sports Academy). The school has been recently renovated and now offers beautiful rooms for the young people as well as many small oases of community where the students can meet, exchange ideas or learn together. The food is excellent and the portions are large. The students from all over the world look out for each other and help each other (lessons, study times, dining hall, ...). The surroundings are really impressive and every time you look out of the window, your heart sinks. The level of security on the entire campus is very high. A boarding school where you feel very comfortable.
