Public holidays in Hong Kong are affirmed by the Government of Hong Kong, and are observed by citizens and residents, as well as employees from private and public sectors.
As per the law, a public holiday that falls on a Sunday would result in an additional public holiday on the immediate weekday following it. Similarly, if the Lunar Chinese New Year, New Year’s Day, or the third day of Lunar New Year falls on Sunday, the fourth Lunar New Year is announced as a statutory holiday. Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year in Hong Kong is the biggest and most colorful festival in the country. They kick-off celebrations in temples, festive markets, and hang up lanterns to mark the new year in the Chinese calendar.
Ching Ming Festival
The third lunar month marks the start of the Ching Ming Festival. Ching Ming means clean and bright. It is this day that Chinese people commemorate the dead and sweep the graves of their ancestors, offering food and incense. The holiday falls on April 4th this year.
Dragon Boat Festival
The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival gathers thousands of spectators every year. It features athletes battling it out with Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races. The festival lasts for three days.
Special Administration Region (SAR) Day
Also called the Establishment Day, the holiday commemorates the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China. Thus, establishing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This holiday falls on July 1 and is celebrated annually.
Chinese National Day
The Hong Kong National Day is celebrated every October 1. This is the day the People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1st, 1949. It is a holiday shared with Mainland China and Macau.
Chung Yeung Festival
The Chung Yeung Festival pays tribute to the age-old practices of ancestor worship in Hong Kong. Families gather in cemeteries to pay honor to their ancestors. People organize picnics at the park or eating special cakes.
