Created by the Diputació de Barcelona in 1913, the Institut del Teatre has more than a hundred years of history as a center dedicated to teaching, creating, researching, preserving and disseminating heritage in the field of performing arts During all these years he has played a determining role in the modernization of the Catalan scene.

The mission of the Institut del Teatre is to be a platform aimed at the continuous cultivation and renovation of the performing arts, and especially the Catalan scene, updating and developing the functions of teaching, creation, research, conservation and dissemination of heritage , always with an innovative will.

The 2014-2017 Strategic Plan establishes as a vision of the Institut del Teatre to position the institution as a leader and referent in the teaching, research and diffusion of Catalan performing arts nationally and internationally.

In 1913, the Diputació de Barcelona created the Institut del Teatre, first known as the Catalan School of Dramatic Arts, and later sustained it for most of its history as a center dedicated to teaching, the investigation, the documentation, and the diffusion of the arts of the spectacle. Throughout its long history, the Institut del Teatre has become a point of reference in the training, documentation and research of the performing arts in Europe. The constant growth of the institution and the complexity of its management - derived mainly from the diverse legal and normative regulations that are applicable in one of the areas of its action - advised, in 1990, to constitute it as an autonomous body, which, in addition, allows it to streamline management and improve the use of resources.

The Autonomous Agency of the Diputació de Barcelona Theater Institute is thus endowed with its own legal personality and heritage, with the capacity to act necessary for the fulfillment of its purposes. These purposes are:

  • The regulated and non-regulated education of the performing arts.
  • The production and organization of conferences, courses, conferences, festivals and exhibitions and any other activity of training and promotion in the various specialties of the performing arts.
  • The activities of edition, of documentation, research and investigation, in the field that is his own.
