In 1990, missionaries from the Presbyterian Church of America and the Evangelical Free Church of America met to consider educational possibilities for their children. That first school, named Nagoya Christian Academy, started in August 1991. Located in Nagakute, adjacent to Nagoya, the school began as a satellite school of the Christian Academy of Japan in Tokyo (CAJ). During the 1999-2000 school year, the school became part of the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS), and the name was changed to International Christian Academy of Nagoya. From 2001 to 2010, ICAN operated as a NICS school under the local auspices of Mission to the World. In May, 2010, ICAN was recognized as a special foundation and now has its own hojin. The school exists to provide an English curriculum based on a Christian philosophy to international and Japanese students.

The vision of the International Christian Academy of Nagoya is to grow as an international school that provides for the English-based academic needs of both Japanese and expatriate families within an atmosphere that fosters Christian character and growth.

The International Christian Academy of Nagoya is a Christ-centered school that impacts the world by providing students with an education based on a biblical worldview in an environment of academic excellence, while cultivating respect for people of all cultures and religions.

Currently, the student body is composed of approximately 90 kindergarten through grade 12 students from thirteen countries: Japan, United States, Korea, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, India, Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland and Pakistan. The school employs 11 full time faculty members. All are American citizens. The director has a doctorate and 8 of the teachers have master’s degrees. All faculty members are evangelical Christians from a variety of denominations.

ICAN offers an American-style, college-preparatory curriculum, geared toward our international audience. All classes are taught in English. The school provides English as a Second Language (ESL) services. In addition, our students have access to online courses through NorthStar Academy, an accredited online school.

Intramural volleyball, basketball, soccer, and other seasonal sports are available. Other extra-curricular activities are offered, such as art club. An active parent-teacher group (PTF) plans family activities throughout the year. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 take Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), a computerized testing program, three times per school year to ensure individual academic progress. Juniors and seniors are encouraged, but not required, to take the SAT or ACT. The academic year consists of 182 instructional days divided into two semesters (August to December, January to June). Classes are 45 minutes per day or the equivalent since middle and high school core courses follow block scheduling!
