The mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart is formulated in The Goals and Criteria, a document that guides us today. The aim of the Sacred Heart schools is the development of the whole person, providing opportunities for academic and non-academic activities. We want our students to grow in dignity, as human beings and as Children of God. When you come to our school, you will experience our unique and proven values program, involving our international faculty and our students, but also all the diverse families of our community.
The International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo was founded in 1908. It is an English speaking school for girls from Grade 1 through Grade 12, and co-educational Kindergarten for three to five years olds. Our purpose is to serve the English speaking community in the Tokyo area. The school offers an international program based primarily on the curriculum from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. The school is CIS and WASC accredited.
The school and its staff provide a warm, loving, and caring atmosphere for our students, within our community. It is my personal and our deep belief that the education we offer at the International School of the Sacred Heart will enable our students to become citizens of the world in transforming our society to bring about peace. For K-8 applicants, at least one of the parents must be able to speak and read English. The educational program is provided through English and our common social and communication language is English, while recognising the value of a student’s mother tongue. The Admissions Board considers factors such as language, educational ability and background as part of the admissions process to ensure diversity and balance in our homerooms.
The purpose of assessment at Sacred Heart is to improve and enrich learning. This assessment policy defines and sets standards based on Principles and Procedures (see below) that will remain constant and thereby provide clear direction for teachers, students, and administrators K-12.
Assessment is a process that provides teachers, students, and administration with information and insights needed to improve teaching effectiveness and learning quality. Assessment helps educators to gather, record, evaluate and report information about student performance and progress toward agreed standards.
College Guidance at Sacred Heart is considered an outgrowth of a comprehensive school wide cooperation of all aspects of our students future. Information is given to students and parents at the proper developmental stages through class meetings and parent programs. This includes suggestions on how to establish sound habits as a student and person which will present the best opportunity to pursue the ‘right fit when it comes to plans for after high school.
In Grade 10, the efforts become more directly focused as students take the PSAT Exam for the first time during school hours in October. The results are explained to students and parents and Personality and Career Assessments are done through access to the College Board website in their Personal Education classes. Students also have a one period a week SAT English Preparation course and have the option to pursue SAT Math help in their Options class.
In Grade 11, students have a weekly class where many aspects of post secondary options are explained. The PSAT is taken for the 2nd time and the College Search process begins in earnest in at the beginning of the second semester including a parent/student/counselor conference to explore desires and choices. Many Grade 11 students choose to attend presentations by the dozens of representatives of college and universities around the globe who come to Sacred Heart or the Tokyo area.
In Grade 12, students again have a weekly class where they begin work on all aspects of the college applications. The weekly classes continue in Grade 12 for the second semester now focusing on topics involving the transition from high school to college, and living abroad.
