One of the world's leading institutions focusing on the tropics, Australia's James Cook University is surrounded by the spectacular ecosystems of the rainforests of the Wet tropics, the dry savannahs, and the iconic Great Barrier Reef. Our unique location enables students from Australia and overseas to study in a diverse physical environment unparalleled by any university in the world. The University conducts nationally significant and internationally recognised research in areas such as marine sciences, biodiversity, tropical ecology and environments, global warming, tourism, and tropical medicine and public health care in under-served populations.

Since our establishment in 1970, we have expanded into a multi-campus institution with our main campuses in the tropical cities of Cairns, Singapore and Townsville, with smaller study centres in Mount Isa, Thursday Island and Mackay. We also have a campus in Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education.

Our students come from many backgrounds, promoting a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses span the Arts, Biomedical Sciences, Business, Creative Media, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Healthcare Sciences, Information Technology, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Planning, Psychological Science, Science, Social Work, Sustainability and Veterinary Science. We aim to give graduates the qualifications and skills they need for the global workforce.

We also recognise our special obligation to be relevant to our own region and have forged close linkages into the economy and social fabric of the northern Queensland. We are dedicated to ensuring that our teaching, learning and research is not only of high quality, but also delivers practical benefits to the peoples and industries of the region.

JCU is defined by the tropics. We are unique among Australian universities, woven into the intellectual, economic and social fabric of our tropical location and set amid irreplaceable ecosystems and cultures that fire our intellects and imaginations. Our aims are challenging but attainable. Marshalling our broad intellectual strengths, we seek knowledge-based ways to help the world’s tropical regions prosper.

Born of the traditional model of excellence in teaching and research, James Cook University has become a modern and dynamic university of truly global standing. Our graduates hold top-level positions around Australia and the world, and our research has earned us a world class reputation.

JCU is Queensland’s second oldest university. We offered our first courses in Townsville in 1961 as an annex of the University of Queensland. Since then we have become a dynamic, multi-campus university with a total of 17,500 students. Our main campuses are located in Townsville and Cairns, and we have international campuses in Singapore and Brisbane.

James Cook University is about people and place. As we enter our fourth decade we continue to offer our students a comprehensive range of courses and opportunities. We will adopt new methods, new approaches and new technologies to help our students develop the skills, abilities, knowledge and intellectual curiosity they need to succeed and make a difference, just as Captain James Cook did 200 years ago.

The education at this Queensland university has been transformative for my son; the staff's unwavering support has truly propelled his growth and confidence!

I don't think people take this seriously as a 'real university '. In Brisbane the students seem to be all international students who are here for other reasons (eg to get a visa). I wonder if they have any domestic students in the Brisbane campus? I think most employers would choose graduates from universities with better reputations. JCU also has a lecturer and tutor who doesn't even hold a degree in her subject area she teaches (eg teaching accounting but holding a degree in Economics?) or something like that. That is what I heard from someone.

Current student. I think it's a great university with friendly helpful staff & teachers. They're always doing renovations and making the campus more modern and aesthetic. Woolies closed replaced by supa IGA which is very convenient for us. The library has lots of high performance computers and quiet study spots, and lots of good books. The curriculum keeps changing which has its pros and cons. But in general i am really enjoying being a student here :)

Great Teaching Staff who I feel are more approachable than large Uni's, ageing facilities that are not being upgraded fast enough. But a nice large university in Northern Queensland.

Great university mostly extremely helpful staff (there is always an exemption but can't grade a university for one lecturer)

Worst experience of my life. Waste of money, poor facilities and teachers. Have now transferred to a new uni and loving it. Jcu is the shittest university in the world and the worst place for anyone who wants to study law. Highly Do not recommend!!

A little outdated but a well equipped campus. Lots of upgrades going on around the place, should be awesome in a couple of years time!

James Cook University offers well-planned support services for international students who wish to study in the university. International support volunteers, learning advisers, student assistance helplines and student mentoring programs are available to students. Aside from all these, JCU also grants scholarships for international students.

Medium university faculty generally cooperative ..lkn country Mellh quite what I would advise them, because the small city of Townsville lacks international students and Ogar diverse people. University of Atakim events and activities for students unwind there Pths actually you specifically if you Azaba alienated and remoteness from the tourist cities also handicap .. studying in a beautiful environment reflects the academic performance and renew your desire to gain knowledge .. But what distinguishes the city is the safety and ethics of people striking and welcoming gay.
