James L Hayes is a contemporary visual Artist & the principal Lecturer in Sculpture at CIT Crawford College of Art in Cork, he is a graduate of Limerick School of Art & Design, The University of Vigo, Spain, De Montfort University Leicester and University College London, UK.

From 1997-2003 he worked at AB Fine Art Ltd London assisting in the production of large-scale artworks and  sculptures for many of the contemporary art worlds leading artists among them was Anish Kapoor, Rachel Whiteread, The Chapman Brothers, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Tracy Emin  & Gary Hume. He was also a personal artist assistant to the late celebrated Welsh Sculptor Barry Flanagan.

In 2005 he was appointed as a Sculpture Lecturer at the CIT Crawford College of Art in Design in Cork and he is a regular visiting lecturer/guest artist and speaker to Universities , Art schools and Art conferences in the US, UK & Europe. In 2011 he founded an International Sculpture symposium, the IRON-R Project in association with the  National Sculpture Factory & The Crawford College of Art & Design, the Project ran also in 2014 and most recently in 2018.

From 2007 to 2013 he has received numerous funding awards from both the Irish Arts Council and Culture Ireland to attend Sculpture Symposia,  residencies in the US, UK & Europe,  most recently in Latvia, New York and Denver Colorado.

In 2016 he received funding from  Culture Ireland , I AM IRELAND Program for a solo show UNO Gallery in New Orleans and also in 2011 he received support to be part of their the IMAGINE Ireland program to complete a one person show at The Good Children Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana USA. Other recent sculptural installations have featured at the West Cork Arts Centre, Redline Contemporary in Denver Colorado and a site-specific temporary work commissioned by Cork County Council was on display in Camden Fort Meagher in Cork. Other recent artworks were exhibited at MART Gallery, Dublin, Tactic Gallery, Cork, Occupy Space, Limerick,  ‘Invite & Reject’ MART -New York , Chicago & LA, Drogheda Arts Centre,  The MART Instructional European Tour , London, Berlin, Norway , Bratislava, & Dublin, The Worcester Contemporary Open-2010, EV+A 2008 ‘too early for vacation..’ Limerick (curated by Hou Hanru), The USUK International Sculpture Symposia, New York, Global Warming at the ICEBOX’-Philadelphia (curated by Adelina Vlas Curator of Modern & Contemporary Collections-The Philadelphia Museum of Art), The Blankspace Gallery, San Francisco, The Burris Hill Galley, New Mexico.

He has completed a number of significant commissioned public artworks most recently for The Office of Public Works (OPW) , The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Building Peace through the Arts Programme, Re-imagining Communities,  Galway County Council, Healy & Associate Architects in Limerick, Cork County Council,  Cork City Council , Mayo County Council &  Limerick City.
