Jichi Medical University, in collaboration with Japan's prefectures, was established to educate dedicated doctors of ethical standing in order to provide highly skilled medical care in remote areas of Japan where medical aid is limited, to promote the health and well-being for people living in rural communities, and to contribute to the advancement of medicine.

Jichi Medical University was established in 1972 to improve and ensure the health and well-being of residents living in areas where medical care is limited. The university was established by the 47 prefectural governments of Japan. The mission of Jichi Medical University is to contribute to the advancement of medicine and nursing and improve patients’ wellbeing by training and educating medical and nursing students to be clinically competent in their practice and ethical in their decision making.

Jichi Medical University, in collaboration with Japan’s prefectures, was established to educate dedicated doctors of ethical standing in order to provide highly skilled medical care in remote areas of Japan where medical aid is limited, to promote the health and well-being for people living in rural communities, and to contribute to the advancement of medicine.

Currently, it is essential to improve and ensure the quality of medical care for the well-being of residents living in remote areas. This is the primary purpose of education at Jichi Medical University. In order to meet the demands of modern society, we must educate medical professionals to be dedicated and competent. As a result, in 1972 Jichi Medical Unversity, and its school of medicine, was established to educate and train general practitioners. As of March 2016, 4,024 students have graduated from Jichi Medical University and are now making great contributions to community medicine. Jichi Medical University’s education is based on three philosophies, seven principles and four goals to foster well-rounded general practitioners who practice community medicine.

Educational Philosophy:

  • To cultivate medical professionals to be compassionate human beings and ethical in judgment.
  • To educate and train medical professionals to be highly knowledgeable and skilled in dealing with complex diseases.
  • To develop medical professionals who will enthusiastically devote themselves to practicing medicine in areas where medical care is limited.

Educational Goals:

  • To educate and train students to learn the essential knowledge and skills required for practicing medicine in variety of medical fields.
  • To encourage a positive attitude and work ethic expected of medical professionals.
  • To enhance students’ literacy and critical thinking skills to accurately assess, understand and solve medical problems by integrating methods from the natural, social and human sciences.
  • To challenge students to self assess their habits, knowledge and skills and to encourage students to take the initiative to improve these abilities through education and training.
