For 60 years, Joan of Arc Academy has provided an outstanding enriched bilingual education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Upon graduating, our students are well-prepared to pursue their high school studies in French or English. Joan of Arc Academy's small class sizes (no larger than 19) allow the students to stay focused, have fewer distractions and develop connections to one another. Joan of Arc Academy girls graduate from the school with a clear sense of their unique strengths and characteristics, as well as an understanding of what they have to contribute to society.
The majority of students who enter the program have never spoken French in their lives, and some have never spoken English. However, our school provides them with a truly bilingual education that goes beyond what is required by the Ontario Ministry of Education. This ensures graduates are gifted with excellent French and English language skills that will last a lifetime.
The students are encouraged to reach their academic and creative potential throughout their years at Joan of Arc Academy. By the time the girls reach Grade 8, they have mastered essential knowledge, reached above-average academic levels, developed outstanding study habits and acquired a passion for learning.
Our graduates leave Joan of Arc Academy as confident, well-rounded young ladies. As a result they are are sought after by all schools and are often offered scholarships from private schools. Thanks to the advanced curriculum, our graduates are able to attend the French or English high school program of their choice. They are customarily accepted into highly-sought-after programs such as, International Baccalaureate, specialist arts programs, and advanced placement. Students are fully challenged within their own classroom learning environment, but we also offer individual enrichment to girls requiring special additional programs.
The Language Arts program strives to help students acquire enriched vocabulary, advanced language comprehension and accurate writing skills through instruction, combined with a wide range of activities in reading, writing, oral communication, and media literacy. Students develop their abilities in four categories of skills: knowledge and understanding, thinking, communication, and application. Additionally, the importance of language skills is emphasized and integrated into other curricular areas.
The Junior and Senior Kindergarten curriculum is taught entirely in French, with the exception of Math in Senior Kindergarten. The children’s bilingualism progresses with amazing speed as their linguistic skills blossom. Qualified, professional, creative teachers work hard to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our youngest students as they learn to read, write and speak in French. Both of our programs also have the added bonus of being tax-deductible. This year we have added a new natural playscape, which are students are fully enjoying as they explore! Joan of Arc Academy delivers an enriched bilingual curriculum based upon the requirements of the French and English Boards concurrently. French, social studies, physical education, drama, musical theatre, dance and elementary music and elementary visual arts are taught in French at a level consistent with the highest standards of a French language school. The remaining classes are conducted in English, at a standard that is consistent with the highest standards of English language schools.
Teaching doesn’t end with the formal curriculum at Joan of Arc Academy; we understand the importance of learning through hands-on experience and we offer a wide range of enriching intellectual challenges. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 explore subjects such as public speaking, stress management, yoga, self-defense, arts, leadership skills, conflict resolution and exam preparation.
