4 Job Hunting Tips to Get the Job You Want

To land a job, you need to have a great interview. However, this is not always the case. By the time you get to the interview, your chances of being hired can already be determined even before your prospect employers meet you in person.

The candidate’s likeability is a major factor considered by the employers since according to career experts, everyone wants to work with people that they like.
But this doesn’t mean that candidates need to develop a friendly relationship or a personal connection to the interviewer just to get a job offer. Having a positive rapport with the interviewer even before may be an advantage.

Here are some ways to make a good first impression on employers:

1. Focus on searching for jobs

When you don’t have a job, you may find yourself in constant anxiousness and just apply to every job you see. The downside in doing this is that applying for too many jobs will make you lose your focus. Instead of filling up so many job applications, you can focus on looking for a job or a company that you’re really passionate about.
You have to customize your resume and cover letter so that your application feels thoughtful, enthusiastic, and unique. To a hiring manager, showing preparedness is a plus point.

You have to be familiar with the overview of the company, business, size, and recent projects. Look up the background of the interviewer and see what you have in common. Then, you can give examples of how you match the qualifications.
While focusing on just important job searches, you have to follow up regularly and quickly return calls from them. You’ll find that you have more time to make a good impression.

Moreover, you may have to consider applying for more than one job at a single company. This will create the impression that you are desperately looking for a job and will take anything that comes your way. There are some cases when the hiring manager will refer you to another position where he/she thinks you’re a good fit.

2. Work on your cover letter

Think of your cover letter as your chance to make a good first impression. You want to connect to the company. You have to make it count!

Your cover letter should include the answer to these 4 questions:

  • Why do you want the job?
  • Why are you qualified for the job?
  • Why are you the right cultural fit for the company?
  • How will you add value to the company?

Make it short, simple, unique. Show how your past experiences have prepared you for the job.

If you’re keen on getting a marketing job, describe how you took the lead in preparing the presentation for the client, the steps you took to perfect the language and graphics and the successful results you achieved.

Do not give them the impression that you don’t know your job, and you’re too lazy to learn new things. No one wants to hire a lazy candidate.

Here’s a simple checklist of what you need to do even before the interview:

  • Visit the company website & social media to get a grasp of the company culture
  • Check the Twitter feeds of company executives
  • Check profiles of some employees on LinkedIn

Doing so will make you look smart and well-informed.

3. Customize your resume to the job

Grab the chance to make a powerful connection through your CV. Make the hiring manager’s job easy by putting your relevant work experience on top so he or she doesn’t have to look for it.

Try to reflect the job description in your CV. If they want someone creative, you can draft your job description to something creative. If they want a team leader, specify that you are a great team leader in one marketing project.

4. Every form of communication is important

Every form of communication is important

Every time you interact with the prospective employer is a chance to make a good impression on them. Write a thank you note after the interview and make a quick phone call to ask the interviewer the next steps in the process. Your behavior is the basis of how they will view you as a potential employee of the company.

When picking up the phone, always sound professional. Follow directions given by the interviewer and check all your text messages first before sending it over, to make sure there are no errors. The moment you walk in the door, your interview starts.

Always be optimistic and claim the job during the interview. When you constantly think about success, you will embody it and it will reflect on your aura. Eventually, recruiters may notice it too and give you that job.
