The John Cooper School was founded through the generosity of corporate and private benefactors, dedicated parents, and other supporters in The Woodlands and the Houston metropolitan area. It was named in honor of Mr. John Cooper, the long-tenured Headmaster of Houston’s Kinkaid School, whose expertise and counsel guided the school through its original formation and early years of operation.
The John Cooper School is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational, college preparatory day school. This school allows your child to receive an education in a comfortable, challenging, diverse, and competitive environment. The faculty and staff are compassionate and nurture the students, providing them with the tools to be valuable contributors to society and successful life-long learners. I've had the pleasure of teaching at Cooper for the past seven years. Ever since I've joined their faculty, I've learned that Cooper values all members of its community: the amount of care given to students as they navigate a challenging education is something I have not seen anywhere else. Cooper balances a healthy mixture of embracing exciting traditions while being trailblazers and innovators in education, advisory curriculum, and athletics. The faculty, staff, and parents are clearly all aligned under a common goal of doing what's best for our students. I can't imagine teaching anywhere else!

I am both the parent of two Cooper students and an employee. As a parent of two Lower School students, I could not be happier. The care with which teachers get to know their students - and their needs - is the true difference maker for us. Teachers are interested in drawing out each unique child's gifts AND helping them grow in areas of need. I am also grateful that the socio-emotional part of a child's development is very top of mind in the school's execution of the day-to-day. Yes, competitive academics are key, but not at the expense of the whole child. Cooper is truly a special place. As an employee, I feel supported in my professional development, and I am provided the opportunity (and time) to get to know my students well. Students in the Upper School are encouraged to take academic risks, and we are given the freedom to customize our interactions to meet their curiosity. I'm in the college counseling office and for us that means not having a boilerplate we must follow. Each relationship looks different because we adjust our style to meet the student's needs. This freedom is the reason I am so grateful to work here.
