John Locke Academy is a new primary school in Uxbridge, built on the old RAF Uxbridge site. This is the beginning of a journey that will establish a friendly, hard-working, aspirational centre of learning. We look forward to meeting and getting to know families already established in the area, as well as those who will be moving into the area to live on St. Andrew’s Park.
At the John Locke Academy, we are creating a primary school that makes learning irresistible. When visitors walk around the school we want them to feel the purposeful, excited buzz of children engrossed in their learning; to see teachers ensuring that children make the most of every learning opportunity and to meet parents who are proud of their children’s achievements.
Our aim is provide an education that meets the needs of all pupils, whatever their starting point. We believe that there is no reason for children not to fulfil their potential given the right curriculum, environment and support. The relationship between parents and the school is vital in ensuring that this potential is met. We aim to ensure that children feel safe and valued so they can work hard and play happily. Each child will have the opportunity to shine.
Our central value is kindness - kind, words, kind hands, kind heart: a safe school. We do not tolerate discrimination or bullying of any sort. Diversity and difference are celebrated as much as the many things that make us the same. We seek to create a community that celebrates and welcomes all children and families.
John Locke Academy is named after the English philosopher, whose belief was that children are born with blank minds – tabla rasa or blank slate. His ‘Some Thoughts on Education‘ outlines three principles for education that have formed the backbone of modern educational change ever since: the development of a healthy body; the formation of a virtuous character; and the choice of an appropriate academic curriculum.
Our vision is to make learning irresistible, ensuring that all our pupils have the skills and strategies they need to prepare them for each stage of their education. We share John Locke’s philosophy that education is key to children having control and choice in their lives – opening and broadening minds to the wider world so that can be successful.
We believe that learning should be fun and engaging, while also being rigorous and challenging. All children should feel that are being stretched academically and should be recognised for the effort and determination they put into learning. Understanding the processes of learning are a vital part of our vision and our ethos celebrates resilience, curiosity, open mindedness and commitment.
Developing values and being able to make moral choices are an important part of our curriculum as are social skills that help all of us learn together. Manners, sharing, listening, tolerance, managing conflict are some of the themes that are taught directly and modelled by all adults and older pupils.
Preparing children for life in Britain in the 21st Century is central to our vision. Children must be equipped for living in an ever changing society. We promote community cohesion by learning about each others' beliefs, faiths and cultures, while understanding the expectations for living in modern British society.
At John Locke Academy we value every child and family. We modify the curriculum
for each child with SEN to enable them to achieve their full potential.
Quality first teaching is vital for all children. However, some pupils need additional or different input for them to make good progress from their starting point.
John Locke Academy is a mainstream school with no specialist provision. However, we are as inclusive as possible and will always work with the very best endeavours to support all pupils. All pupils with SEN are valued, respected and equal members of the community. Every effort is made to ensure that pupils are integrated into the daily life of the school and into mainstream classrooms and haveaccess to a broad and relevant curriculum.
