Higher education in Lithuania is divided into first study cycle (Bachelor’s), second study cycle (Master’s), and third study cycle (Doctoral) studies.

Bachelor’s studies in four years lead to a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) and Master’s studies in two or one and a half years lead to a Master of Science degree (M.Sc.). The possession of a Bachelor’s degree or other qualifications of higher education is a prerequisite of entry to a Master’s degree programme.
The Doctor of Science degree (D.Sc.), which equates with a Ph.D. or with a somewhat higher degree elsewhere, takes a further four years to acquire and is only awarded to those whose research provides a significant and original contribution in the selected field. Degree study programme – totality of study subjects that are mandatory to be completed and assessed.
Studies at the university are executed under Bachelor, Master or PhD degree study programmes. After fulfilling all requirements of the study programme, the student is awarded a diploma of an equivalent qualification degree (Bachelor, Master or PhD).
Basic unit of study planning is study module; it consists of independent study subject, which is taught for one semester. Study module can consist of various combinations of lectures, lab works, practice, seminars, student's independent work, scientific research work, designing or other works. Study module can be mandatory, alternative (optional from the list), general, minor and optional.
Studies of each module are completed by evaluation of student's knowledge and skills – examination or student's independent work (project) is evaluated by a mark. In accordance to the intensity of studies, there are full-time and part-time studies.
Full-time studies are the main form of studies while organizing all study cycles under degree and non-degree study programmes. Ordinary scope of full-time studies is 60 credits, but no less than 45 credits.
Part-time studies provide a possibility to study at a slower pace. Scope of one year of part-time studies cannot exceed 45 credits and total duration of part-time studies cannot be one and a half times longer than full-time studies, applying the rate of 60 credits. Graduation from studies of various forms provides equivalent education.
Kaunas University of Technology has 149 study programmes, of which 60 are Bachelor's, 71 are Master's, 17 are Doctoral and 1 – non-degree student programmes. 61 of them are taught in English.
University has 10,494 students, of which 7,620 are Bachelor's, 2,502 are Master's, 557 are foreign, and 335 are Doctoral students. All of that fits into 9 faculties of KTU.
