Konkuk University was established as Chosun School of Politics, a junior college for future political leaders, by Dr. Yoo Seok-chang. Thirteen years later, the school became a “comprehensive university” and changed its name to Konkuk, which means “founding a nation” in Hanja (Chinese characters). As strong believers in the role of higher education in maintaining Korea’s sovereignty, the founder and his supporters chose the name in the hopes that Konkuk graduates would build and serve the nation. As of 2016, Konkuk University has two campuses—the main campus in the heart of Seoul and the Glocal campus in Chungju—with approximately 29,000 students enrolled.
Konkuk University has played an important role in Korea’s development by raising leaders. The late Dr. Seok-chang Yoo established a small non-profit hospital and the university in 1931 and 1946, respectively, to serve the people and the country, and Konkuk is carrying on this legacy as a comprehensive private university.
Against this background, the Konkuk University Foundation has focused on capacity building through aggressive large-scale infrastructure projects at the turn of the century and shifted the paradigm in university administration as we open a new chapter in history.
In addition, Dr. Yoo was aware that the limited space would not be sufficient to provide future agricultural leaders with ample hands-on experience. Despite the severe financial difficulties and skepticism after the Korean War, he boldly executed a move to the current location in Seoul. Thanks to Dr. Yoo’s generous endowment and education philosophy, Konkuk University not only leads in agricultural and life science research, but also excels in many other areas today. Furthermore, Konkuk University has undergone major transformations in the past decade, earning the title of “the fastest growing university in Korea.”
Konkuk offers extensive courses in English, and international students also have many opportunities to learn Korean culture and language by mingling with their Konkuk classmates. Hence, a diverse group of international students study at Konkuk every semester. In the spring semester of 2018, more than 1,200 undergraduate students were pursuing their undergraduate degrees at Konkuk. There were an additional 130 participants in Konkuk’s exchange and visiting student programs during the same period. Approximately, 100 students also came to Konkuk for short-term summer programs in 2017.

Konkuk University, a school famous for cowsThere is a large reservoir inside the school, so it feels like a park.
Perhaps that's why you can see not only students but also many people around the school coming here to take a walk.

This is Konkuk University, which I visited after a long time. The frozen lake makes me feel lonely, but geese playing on the lake? I feel comforted by the sight.

I studied here for one semester and I really enjoyed it. Teachers are good and mostly friendly. You study together with Korean students which is nice. There is a lot of group work and work that has to be done at home. Exams are fair.

It's a great place for a walk! A place with pretty trees and a calm lake. It is a truly beautiful place with cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring. It's the perfect place to have a date at Konkuk University Station, go to a good restaurant, eat, and walk! It's a distance that can be digested if you take a slow walk. There are many benches, so it's a great place to sit and talk :-) It's also close to Children's Grand Park Station, which is nice.

There are two subway stations near this university, but the nearest one is Children’s Grand Park. I came here on a winter morning when the lake inside was half-frozen. I really liked the trees on this campus; they were unique, even the trees on the small street that leads to the main gate. There is a small museum inside to commemorate the man who founded this university, and you can also find his tomb on the campus. I enjoyed my time here a lot.
