Westonbirt enjoys a rich boarding heritage and vibrant boarding community that benefits day students and boarders alike. The School was recently voted ‘Co-educational Independent School of the Year’ at the Independent School of the Year awards and is also included in the Fortune ‘World’s Leading Boarding Schools’ report with a five star review.
We have four boarding houses onsite, with a Year 13 co-ed boarding house based in Tetbury, to help prepare students for the transition to university. A new Junior boarding house for pupils in Years 6-8 will open in early .
Full, weekly and flexi boarding is available (a minimum of three consecutive nights). Boarders enjoy a full programme of evening/weekend activities and access to a fitness suite, swimming pool and 9-hole golf course.
Each house is run by a House Parent, with assistant staff to support them. Pupils’ health, wellbeing and safety is of paramount importance and pastoral care is embedded throughout all aspects of the School. We have a Health and Wellbeing Centre to provide medical care, with access to doctors, counsellors and a physiotherapist.
Sedgwick House – Boys’ and Girls’ Boarding, Years 6-8
Our new Junior Boarding House is due to open by Easter , located next to the Sports Centre. This is the first time that the School will have offered boarding to pupils in Year 6; an exciting development for younger pupils who will be able to gain greater independence ahead of the move to senior school, immerse themselves in activities and enjoy the warmth and inclusivity of the boarding community. Sedgwick will have space for 24 boarders across Years 6, 7 and 8, with one floor designated for girls and one for boys.
Our boys’ boarding has expanded to include junior and senior boarding houses, plus offsite university-style living for Year 13 students.
Badminton House – Junior Boys’ Boarding, Years 7 – 9
Badminton House has spacious dorms with magnificent views across the back lawns of the school. It boasts a cosy common room with table tennis and modern technology for evening games and film nights once prep is complete. Miss Lisa Allen is the main House Parent for Badminton.
Beaufort House – Senior Boys’ Boarding, Years 10 – 12
Beaufort is a standalone, contemporary boarding house enjoying university-style study bedrooms, near the courtyard at Westonbirt. It also enjoys its own kitchen facilities and communal inside and outdoor spaces. Beaufort boys are in the care of House Parent Mr Giles Cuddy.
Dorchester House – Girls’ Boarding, Years 7 – 11
With many years of experience in pastoral care at Westonbirt, Sally Gould creates a ‘home from home’ environment running Dorchester House with her spaniel, Strumble. Dorms are bright and cosy and students can decorate their spaces with pictures and personal effects. There is also a spacious and comfortable common room where students can enjoy movie nights and social time once prep is complete.
Gloucester House – Senior Girls’ Boarding, Year 12
In Gloucester house, Year 12 girls enjoy individual university-style study bedrooms as an exciting stepping stone before moving to our offsite Year 13 boarding accommodation in their final year. Gloucester Girls are in the care of house parent Miss Westmoreland.
Holford House – Co-ed Boarding, Year 13
September saw the opening of our new Year 13 Boarding House, set within 9 acres of orchards and gardens, on the outskirts of Tetbury and just a mile from Westonbirt. Holford House offers approx. 30 ensuite bedrooms, a substantial common room and the opportunity for students to prepare for university living or professional life in their final year at school.
Deputy Head Pastoral, Mrs Barnes and Mr Slowik are the house parents. There is a regular shuttle bus running between Holford and Westonbirt.
