The Faculty of Science of the University of Oulu announces University Lecturer position. The position is located within the Geography Research Unit. The Unit currently has five key focus areas in education: Regional Development and Regional Policy, Geoinformatics, Physical Geography, Regional and Political Geography, and Tourism Geographies.
The Research Unit offers a progressive, stimulating, and international working environment. According to Oulu University’s Research Assessment Exercise and international rankings (e.g., QS-ranking), Geography Research Unit has been consistently one of the strongest units at Oulu University. Researchers working at the Unit have contributed substantially to international research and debates in several sub-fields of Geography.
This is a teaching-oriented position, which is available to both Finnish and international applicants. The candidate must have a demonstrated teaching and research background in Geography.
The University Lecturer will act as the Director of the Degree Program and Master’s Programs in Geography. The person appointed to the position will be responsible for planning, implementation and quality assurance of the above-mentioned programs. They will be responsible for curriculum planning in Geography, practical organizing and development of teaching, applying funding for teaching, curriculum development and student selection processes for the Degree Programs. They should also advance academic education and display pedagogical leadership. The teaching duties include basic level and advanced courses given in Finnish and English. Especially, the person appointed should contribute to the teaching of research methods in Human Geography (preferably both qualitative and quantitative). The successful candidate is expected to supervise theses at all levels (BSc, MSc, and PhD). Moreover, the research of the chosen applicant should complement the key research themes at the Unit. In addition to teaching and research tasks, administrative duties are included in the annual total of 1 624 working hours.
Fluency in both written and spoken English and Finnish, as well as strong communication and teamwork skills are required. Assessment of the applicants’ qualifications will be based on the following criteria, acknowledging the content of the job (see above): teaching experience and pedagogical training, scientific publications, thesis supervision, administrative experience, activity in the scientific community, national and international mobility, and other international activities. Applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree in Geography (or a related discipline) and have demonstrable qualifications in teaching and research, as indicated in the CV, teaching portfolio, education development plan, publication list, and research plan attached to the application.
The position is permanent. The salary will be based on the 6-7 of the demand level chart for teaching and research personnel of the salary system of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievements and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of basic salary level for the position.
