Maryvale is a Catholic school where children are educated from the age of 3 to 11 in a caring, supportive and encouraging environment where all aspects of their development: spiritual, moral, emotional, physical, social, personal, cultural, and of course academic; are nurtured and can flourish.

Maryvale is one of the oldest Catholic Primary Schools in the country. The school was built on the present site in 1881 by the Sisters of Mercy to cater for the children in the orphanage and for local Catholic families. There was however a school established in the orphanage itself prior to this date. The orphanage closed in 1980 and the building is now used as the Diocesan Centre for Catechesis.

There has been a long tradition of Catholic Faith at Maryvale. The parish was established in 1669, although there is believed to be evidence of a Saxon church here. Maryvale House was once the home of the recently beatified, Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman, who gave the area the name "Maryvale". The original Oscott Seminary was also founded in the house.

Maryvale Catholic Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment. Our School Mission underpins all we do and say at Maryvale Catholic Primary school. As a community we pride ourselves on actively living out the mission by loving, living, learning and praying as Jesus teaches us.

  • Showing care for those in our local community – raising funds and donating food to our local food bank and our own order of nuns.
  • Showing care for those globally – Raising money for charities such as Cafod and Fr. Hudson’s homes.
  • Looking after our elderly – performing for the local pensioners at the community centre.
  • Loving each other – we have classroom rules that underpin the mission of the school.
  • We live as role models by following the behaviour policy in school and trying our best in all we do.
  • By keeping ourselves and others safe – holding themed days and assemblies e.g. anti-bullying days.
  • Working in partnership with our other schools in the area by sharing ideas, supporting and working with each other.
  • By living out our mission statement by showing respect for each other and ourselves, being honest, being kind and friendly and helping others.
  • Working together in partnership – home, school and parish.
  • Respecting each other – multi faith weeks.
  • Have high expectations of and work hard.
  • Use our gifts and talents to the best of our ability.
  • The home school agreement underpins the partnership of parents/guardians and school staff working together to benefit the children.
  • Extra-curricular activities and trips are used to enhance the learning opportunities of the children so that they can reach their full potential and enjoy activities of their choice.
  • Enriched curriculum with theme weeks.
