We believe that a student’s secondary school experience should be meaningful in every way. We are a small independent school serving grades 8-12, and this is by design and fundamental to our mission. Engaging the experience is an extraordinary faculty that inspires the best in each student. A Middleburg Academy education is all-encompassing.
Our campus is located in the beautiful hills of historic Loudoun County. The campus is home to faculty and administrators who live on campus along with a herd of deer that roam over 90 acres of woods, fields and lawns. Goose Creek, that borders our campus, is a staging point for kayaking and canoeing while fans of our athletic teams enjoy spirited games with wonderful vistas of the hills and distant Bull Run Mountains.
To know Middleburg Academy is to know what an extraordinary independent school educational experience can be. To know Middleburg Academy is to know that your child will be afforded the opportunity to be part of a community which cares deeply about the fulfillment of his or hers potential. We do this in the context of a global outlook, and we take advantage of a location that is easily accessible to our nation’s capital and beyond. It is the place where a student comes of age, a place we call Middleburg Academy.
Middleburg Academy inspires students to excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics. We are a dynamic community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni dedicated to lifelong learning, service to others, personal growth, and the success of each student. Middleburg Academy strives to develop young men and women of moral integrity who who are responsible leaders and citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.
Middleburg Academy interprets “college preparation” in the broadest sense: we prepare our students for the academic demands of higher education, but we also help each to develop his or her own moral compass in preparation for increased independence at college. This genuine emphasis on developing the whole person – head and heart, intellect and character – is deeply embedded in our rich and varied past. The philosophy was established in 1965, when Notre Dame Academy was founded as a Catholic boarding school for girls; it was there in the 1990s, as we evolved into a coeducational Catholic day school; and it continues to guide a non-sectarian extraordinary independent school - welcome to Middleburg Academy.
We offer an ideal setting for educational enrichment, and students take full advantage of our pastoral ninety-acre campus. They may know that one of the best spots to read and write is under an ancient oak tree; or that the local Virginia countryside provides a stunning panorama to photograph, paint, or draw; or that there are grassy expanses for launching rockets in physics class.
Middleburg Academy’s curriculum seeks to stimulate intellectual curiosity and to provide the foundation upon which a life of continuous learning can be constructed. Students receive strong academic fundamentals and are challenged at the highest levels in mathematics, science, English, social studies, foreign languages, ethics, and world religions, as well as in the performing and visual arts. They participate in a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and activities that promote teamwork and offer leadership opportunities. Throughout this varied coursework, students are also exposed to the complexities of the world around them and are encouraged to observe and investigate. Guided by our school’s mission, students learn to respond as engaged, problem-solving citizens.
Middleburg Academy inspires students to achieve excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics. Our school strives to develop young men and women of moral integrity who will be responsible leaders and citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.
Our 90-acre, historic campus is home to a community that strongly upholds our Honor Code, an expected standard of integrity that ensures a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Each student belongs to an Advisory, a small group led by a Faculty Advisor who acts as another “parent” on campus, serving as the main point of contact for families regarding their child’s progress and overall well-being. Our Student-Parent-Advisor Conferences help students to take responsibility for their own education.
The academic environment is unique at Middleburg Academy. There are no class bells that interrupt our Harkness table discussions, in which students and faculty sit together as equals at large, communal tables, and many visitors remark on a certain ease in the climate of our daily life.
