More Than Education: Murdoch Dubai's Holistic Approach to Student Success

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Mohamed Bamatr, the visionary Executive Director of Murdoch University Dubai. In this insightful interview, Bamatr shares his strategic outlook for the university, detailing how Murdoch University Dubai is proactively shaping the future of education in the region and beyond.

1. What is your vision for the university’s future, and how do you plan to achieve it in the next five years?

My vision is to position Murdoch University Dubai as the GCC’s leading institution for industry-driven education, innovation, and global employability. Over the next five years, we aim to double our student body through strategic partnerships, launch high-impact executive education programs, and develop Dubai as a regional Business and Innovation Hub under the Murdoch brand. We’ll achieve this through a focus on entrepreneurship, regional engagement, and real-world learning, all while maintaining academic excellence rooted in Murdoch’s Australian heritage.

2. How is the university adapting to the challenges of digital learning and integrating new technologies into education?

We’ve moved beyond reacting to digital challenges—we are actively shaping the future of learning. Murdoch University Dubai integrates AI-driven learning platforms, blended delivery models, and AR/VR technology into classrooms. We also offer micro-credentials and stackable learning pathways that reflect the agility needed in today’s job market. Digital fluency is now embedded not only in how we teach but also in how students learn, collaborate, and solve problems.

3. What strategies are you implementing to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus?

Diversity is in our DNA. With students from over 80 nationalities, we proudly reflect Dubai’s global character. We implement inclusive admission policies, scholarships for underserved communities, and ensure gender-balanced leadership across departments. Our curriculum and student activities celebrate intercultural understanding, while our mentoring and support services are tailored to diverse needs. We’re committed to building a safe, inclusive campus where every voice matters and every student thrives.

4. What role do you see the university playing in addressing global issues like climate change or public health?

As a university with a global mindset, we have a responsibility to address the world’s most pressing challenges. In Dubai, we are establishing a Food Security and Climate Innovation Institute, focused on the intersection of climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and regional development. We also integrate public health and sustainability into our coursework and community initiatives, empowering students to become change-makers, not just graduates.

5. How are you fostering partnerships with industry to enhance job opportunities for students?

We believe that industry collaboration is essential to preparing students for the future. Our new Murdoch Business & Innovation Hub (MBIH) brings students into direct contact with real companies, investors, and entrepreneurs. Through co-designed projects, corporate mentorships, and internship pipelines, we are closing the gap between education and employment. We also work closely with partners in logistics, technology, media, and healthcare to ensure our programs meet market needs.

6. What steps is the university taking to support student mental health and well-being?

Student success starts with well-being. That’s why we provide on-campus mental health support, peer mentoring, and proactive wellness workshops. We train our faculty and staff to recognise signs of distress early, and we’re building a culture of openness where students feel safe to speak up. We’ve also embedded resilience and emotional intelligence training into orientation and student leadership programs. Our goal is a holistic student experience that supports both academic achievement and personal growth.

7. How do you plan to attract and retain top faculty in a competitive academic environment?

We offer more than a job—we offer purpose. At Murdoch University Dubai, faculty are part of a mission to reshape higher education in the region. We invest in their growth through research opportunities, innovation grants, and leadership development. Our Dubai campus offers a unique platform to influence regional policy, engage in entrepreneurial teaching, and be part of a growing global network. We also foster a collaborative, supportive culture where ideas and initiative are valued.

8. How is the university leveraging alumni networks to support current students and recent graduates?

Our alumni are an active, growing community of professionals across the globe. We are building structured alumni programs where graduates return as mentors, guest speakers, and internship providers. We’ve launched a regional Alumni Council to strengthen ties and provide more direct opportunities for students to connect with real-world career paths. By celebrating alumni success and making them part of the learning journey, we’re creating a culture of continuous support and connection.

9. If you could share one motivational quote on a highway billboard, what would it say?

“Be the bridge that others cross to reach their potential.”

This reflects my philosophy in leadership, education, and life. At Murdoch University Dubai, we don’t just provide degrees—we create pathways, open doors, and enable transformation. That’s our mission, and it’s what drives me every day.
