Muirden Senior College is quite different from other secondary schools. Opportunity and self-sufficiency are two features students experience while studying with us. A team of both experienced and young, vibrant, highly qualified, specialist teachers work closely with students creating a nurturing, relaxed environment, offering one-on-one support when needed. Small classes, from 5 to 15 students, enable flexibility in the teaching of curriculum allowing teachers to respond to the needs of students on an individual level. It is our aim to remain a small school community of between 100 and 120 full-time equivalent enrolments over the two senior years. This encouraging and cooperative atmosphere supports students through the transition from school to university.

Muirden College, established in 1900, has provided quality education in a flexible learning environment for over 100 years. Muirden offers subjects specifically aimed at University entrance. Muirden provides a friendly, positive work situation which encourages teachers and students to work together. Our teachers are dedicated, highly qualified professionals who bring with them a variety of educational and personal experiences and enjoy working with young people.

At Muirden we acknowledge and accept individual differences. We provide a supportive setting which encourages students to develop a responsible and positive approach to their work and the school community. It is our aim to remain a small school community of between 100 and 120 full-time equivalent enrolments. This means that our classes are much smaller than in traditional schools. Class sizes average between 10 and 15 students allowing teachers more time to work with students on an individual basis. There are no extracurricular activities, or any of the many ‘extras’ which in traditional schools can absorb student’s and teacher’s time and attention. In confirming their acceptance of a place for their student at the College, parents/guardians/students:

  • Agree to be bound by the present and future policies of the College
  • Accept that the enrolment deposit will be retained by the School
  • Agree to pay all fees by the due date shown on the term’s account
  • Accept that the College takes responsibility for students only during teaching hours while they are on the College grounds
  • Accept that students may leave the premises between classes, but at their own risk
  • Accept that students may be required to attend organised school excursions and activities as part of a course of studies and that they may also be required to view films and multimedia presentations where appropriate and that parental permission is granted
The College follows the DETE school calendar as this ensures maximum class time throughout the year:
  • Stage 1 (Year 11) and adult re-entry students are encouraged to complete diagnostic assessments on their commencement day to enable teachers to provide suitable programs for them.
  • Stage 2 (Year 12) students have trial exams at the end of Terms 2 & 3. Teachers aim to complete the theory component of their courses by the end of Term 3 to enable the trial exams to cover the entire syllabus.
  • The school year finishes at the end of November for the Stage 1 students, and at the completion of final exams for Stage 2 students (usually the last week of November).
