The school – originally known as The Norwegian School in Hong Kong – was established by the Norwegian Lutheran Mission and the Norwegian Mission Society as a non-profit school to provide education for the children of Norwegian missionaries. In its early years, Norwegian was the language of instruction, with English lessons conducted by subject teachers.

In 1992 The Norwegian School moved from Cox Road, Kowloon Tong to the Tai Po Bungalow at 175 Kwong Fuk Road, Tai Po. Tai Po Bungalow is a heritage building listed under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance; its original structure remains largely intact to this day, thus providing the intimate, homely environment that we still enjoy.

In 1994 The Norwegian School began to receive students from international backgrounds and changed to English as its medium of instruction. In 2001 the name of the school was officially changed to Norwegian International School, and in 2003 the Norwegian Lutheran Mission became the sole owners of NIS. Throughout these changes, our school community, along with our commitment to providing globally oriented, quality, Christian education has continued to grow. In 2008 the school was granted a small school building in the nearby village of Kam Shan for its primary classes while its growing kindergarten remains at the Bungalow.

In 2010 the founders of the school, the Norwegian Lutheran Mission, transferred the sponsorship of NIS to Generations Christian Education (Generations). Generations has been operating Small World Christian Kindergarten (Small World) on Hong Kong Island for the last 30 years (www.smallworld.hk). Even before their joining Generations, NIS shared together with them very similar core values, goals, and philosophies to education. Small World formally started in January 1986 as a ministry arm of Youth With A Mission (HK) Ltd (known as YWAM). The first class had eight students and two teachers. The seed for Small World came from a YWAM planning day where two teachers asked “How can we make a difference to God’s Kingdom in Hong Kong?”. With mutually complementing services and strengths, the organisation looks forward to exciting growth and development in the coming few years.

The change in sponsorship also came with a confirmation of our mission. We desire to leave a legacy for the generations of children to come. We want our students to possess a true sense of self-worth, enabling them to stand up for themselves and for purposes greater than themselves. Our desire is to build a legacy of courageous, competent and compassionate leaders, serving the greater global community to which our current students belong.

You will not find a more unique school in all of Hong Kong than Norwegian International School. True to the vision of its founding missionaries, NIS continues to nurture students’ character and academic development, building its foundation on Biblical principles and values.

Upon spending time at NIS, you will discover a school that puts great importance in its community and the relationships between family, students, and teachers. With our small class sizes, students at NIS have a particularly close relationship with teachers, and teachers with parents. Each member of the school body is an integral part in helping our students become well-rounded individuals who will continue to grow in wisdom, integrity, and purpose. By building their knowledge, skills and character, and helping them to become internationally minded, our students will gain a greater understanding of the world around them and contribute to the success of the community in which they live – developing Christ-like values to become a people serving God and serving others.

Our school grounds are a favourite amongst our students, families and guests. In this beautiful, green environment, students love playing together and interacting with the natural surroundings. This great space also serves as a vital part in students’ learning where they can be their curious selves and learn about God’s creation hands-on. We have the space for the wildest of art and the biggest of projects. The field is also home to many of our special school events we hold throughout the year. It brings us great joy seeing students and parents staying after school on the field enjoying a soccer game together or mothers chatting as their children climb on one of the many pieces of play equipment around the school.

Whether you are looking for a new school or just visiting, we hope that you find what you are looking for on our website. Please drop by; you are welcome with open arms and smiling faces.

We are dedicated to cultivating individuals of character, compassion, courage and competence; by inspiring our students to pursue academic excellence within an engaged, diverse and nurturing community, creating a global people of Christian faith, a people serving others.

As a graduated student of this school, I believe this school is very good, filled kindness from the teachers. It's not a big community but it's filled with positivity, some of my best years are spent here and it has a good environment. The big grass field has bred many core memories of my life and I believe if your child comes to this school they will find joy as well.

Studied here for primary school, made many lovely memories. Its a relatively small school, so it really gets your children to learn and socialize with peers and teachers. I'm graduating this year in 2023, and I have grown up alongside many of the classmates I had since coming to NIS. Even now, I'm still in contact with the current headmaster. They really built my childhood from the ground up, where I honestly love and cherish each and every moment. The teachers are all seriously lovely. Whenever I decide to visit, even if I have never met them, they still greet me as if I was back in primary. Seriously amazing school.

Relocating from England to HK wasn't easy. But all the teachers were very supportive and helpful making my daughter's transition very smooth. She is a very happy girl going to school every day ready for learning and this is why I highly recommend this school.

A beautiful school that is within close proximity to the MTR. The school has a wonderful outdoor environment along with spacious classrooms and small class sizes too. Teachers are wonderfully caring, nurturing and genuine. I am happy and grateful to have NIS work closely with The Education University, giving opportunities for our students to experience such a wonderful school.
