Job Summary

The Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University is seeking to appoint a Professor in Welsh and Celtic Studies. The role will involve leadership in, and active involvement with, the departmental research agenda and its grant funding activity within an over-arching Faculty-level context. The role-holder will drive the department’s research agenda forward within both a subject specific and a multi-disciplinary framework, and will work to secure a prominent profile for research in Welsh and Celtic Studies in a way that will engage external partners and the wider world. The role-holder will lead on developing a distinctive AU-focused research strategy, which is responsive to the thematic priorities of research councils and funders, as well as the political imperatives of Welsh government and the specific aims and ambitions of AU’s institutional research strategy. Within this role, it is expected that scholarly research will be undertaken, in accordance with REF guidelines and also within the broader framework of the department’s commitment to the development of excellent research, across a varied spectrum of activity that includes practice as research and research practice.

This leadership will take account of the framework of departmental provision as a whole and will engage with AU strategic priorities in terms of recruitment, retention and student experience. The role holder will contribute to the delivery of excellence in research-led teaching and learning in the relevant subject area, both within the context of national and institutional guidelines. The role holder will be expected to represent the department in the sector, to have productive relations with key industry stakeholders and public bodies, and to hold and develop a public profile commensurate with that responsibility.

Within the recognised workload allocation system, you will be required, where appropriate, to teach and assess modules at undergraduate level and postgraduate level, across the different areas of provision within the departmental teaching programmes. You will also play a creative and pro-active role, in relation to the marketing and recruitment of departmental provision and schools liaison and visits in your subject area. You will demonstrate an active and critical engagement with your subject, be active in the context of the student satisfaction agenda and engage actively with marketing, admissions and recruitment procedures in your subject area. The role-holder will support the Head of Department in the administration of the department, with particular reference to the research agenda, and may deputise as appropriate.
