Bahrain is a country with more than 30 islands. Manama is the capital, which has a population of 157,000 people. The country covers about 765.3 km² of land area.
There are plenty of private, government and independent schools and universities in Bahrain. In general, schools have three semesters and a long summer break. Each school in Bahrain observes different school holidays, except for Islamic holidays which are observed in the whole country. Islamic holidays are based on the moon sighting (lunar calendar).

Arafat Day
The Arafat Day commemorates Muhammad’s final sermon and completion of the message of Islam.
Ashoora
This is a holiday in Bahrain which is celebrated for two days. It occurs on the ninth and tenth days of Muharram.
Eid Al Fitr
The end of Ramadan (Fasting) marks the start of Eid Al Fitr. The holiday is celebrated in Bahrain and across the GCC region and other Muslim countries. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day and break their fast at night. Most restaurants are closed and businesses operate in shorter hours.
Eid Al Adha
Known as the Greater Eid, Eid Al Adha is also called the Feast of the Sacrifice. The holiday honors (Abraham) who wanted to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
National Day
December 16 is the National Day in Bahrain. This holiday commemorates the anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s accession to power.
Prophet’s Birthday
The third month on the Islamic calendar is the celebration of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
Bahrain offers free primary education to students. It is also compulsory education mandated by the government. Primary school begins at 6 years old and the curriculum includes religious instruction (Islamic teachings) for 9 years.
After primary school, students will continue to intermediate school or middle school, where they will complete standardized academic programs. All students are required to follow this academic program.
Upon completing primary school, students can take secondary school for 3 years. Secondary education includes general, commercial or industrial programs. Education in the secondary level is free in Bahrain.
