All the schools in Greece share the same school calendar provided by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs. However, the holiday dates for public schools and private schools may slightly differ with up to two extra days in the academic year. Generally, school holidays in Greece are long breaks within the school year and include summer, Christmas and Easter holidays.

What are the other holidays in Greece?

New Year’s Day
This day is observed on January 1st in the Gregorian calendar and marks the beginning of the new year.

Epiphany
Epiphany also referred to as Three Kings Day, is observed on January 6th in celebration of the presentation of Jesus to the wise men.

Independence Day
This day marks Greece’s independence together with the feast of Annunciation and is observed on March 25th. The Feast of Annunciation commemorates Angel Gabriel announcement to Mary that she would conceive and give birth to the son of God, Jesus.

Orthodox Good Friday
This day is observed on the Friday before Orthodox Easter Sunday. The Easter period is an important observation in the Orthodox Church, and Orthodox Good Friday marks the day Jesus was crucified.

Orthodox Easter Monday
This holiday marks the day when Mary Magdalene found the tomb in which Jesus was buried after crucifixion empty. Orthodox Easter Monday signifies the conclusion of the Lent period.

Labor Day
Labor Day also referred to as May Day is observed on May 1st in celebration of the achievements of the labor movements.

Orthodox Pentecost Monday
This day is also referred to as Holy Spirit Monday and is observed approximately seven weeks after Orthodox Easter. The dates between the Orthodox church and the Western church usually vary because of the difference in calculations of the date of Easter. Usually, Orthodox Pentecost Monday falls between May 25th and June 27th.

Assumption Day
This is an annual celebration that is observed on August 15th and is also referred to as the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. On this day, Christians celebrate the assumption of Mary into heaven.

Ochi Day
This day is also known as the World War II National Holiday and is observed on October 28th. Ochi Day is a Greek observance that marks the rejection to yield to the Axis powers in 1940.

Christmas Day
Christmas Day is observed on December 25th in celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Synaxis of the Mother of God
In Greece, December 26th is observed in celebration of the Synaxis of the Mother of God in Eastern Christianity.
