School holidays in Sweden slightly differ depending on the region or city, as declared by the Ministry of Education and Research. Sweden has four distinct regions and their winter and Easter holiday vary. These regions include:

• Stockholm
• North Sweden: Jämtland
• South Sweden: Gotland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Blekinge, Norrbotten, Halland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Östergötland, Skåne, Södermanland and Västra Götaland.
• Central Sweden: Dalarna, Gävleborg, Örebro, Uppsala and Värmland.

During the winter break and Easter break, there are regional differences in school holiday dates. However, Christmas, summer, and autumn holidays are the same across all the regions in Sweden.

New Year’s Day
New Year’s day marks the beginning of the new year in the Gregorian calendar and is observed on January 1st.

Epiphany
Epiphany is celebrated on June 6th and commemorates two events in Jesus Christ’s life according to Christian beliefs. These events include when Jesus’ baptism took place and the night the three wise men visited Jesus when he was born.

Good Friday

May 1st or Labor day is associated with the beginning of spring and celebrates the Swedish workforce.

Ascension Day
This is the 40th day of Easter which celebrates the ascension of Jesus into heaven.

National Day
National Day, formerly called “Swedish Flag Day” is a patriotic holiday in Sweden that is observed on June 6th.

Whit Sunday
Whit Sunday or Pentecost Sunday celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus as based on the Bible.

Midsummer Day
The Midsummer Day is observed between June 20th – June 26th. This day originates from celebrations of the summer solstice.

All Saints’ Day
All Saints’ Day commemorates all the Christian Saints in many Anglican, Protestant, and Roman Catholic churches, especially those who don’t have specific days when they are commemorated.

Christmas Day
Christmas Day is observed on December 25th and celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

Boxing Day
Boxing Day is observed on December 26th.
