Welcome to St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, where our high expectations for learning, behaviour and responsibility enable our children to believe and achieve.
Our small, friendly, Church of England school is a diverse one form entry school close to Upper Street in Islington. We are proud of our friendly, welcoming and nurturing ethos, which is underpinned by Christian values and beliefs. With our fun, Creative Curriculum, and the strong care, guidance and support we provide, St Mary’s is an exciting and inspiring school to learn and grow. We embrace positive partnerships with parents, as we strongly believe that together we can empower our children to be enthusiastic and resilient learners in life, daring to believe and to achieve.
Together we Aspire and Believe, Together we Achieve’ is embodied in our school Vision Story ‘The Three Gold Leaves’. We are proud of our 300 year heritage and Christian beliefs and values that underpin our nurturing, respectful and collaborative ethos here at St Mary’s.
At St Mary’s Church of England Primary School we place Christian beliefs and values at the heart of all we do. Whatever we do, we aim to follow Christ’s example of respect and love".
At St Mary’s we aim to deliver the National Curriculum in a fun, inspiring and inclusive way, whilst also ensuring our Christian values are at the heart of everything we do.
At Mary’s we’ve developed an enriched, fun and engaging curriculum, designed for our children, which will allow them to be successful as they move into the next stage of their life.
We actively teach the skills, knowledge and resilience children need to prepare them, not only for the next stage in their education, but also for life.
We actively teach the skills, knowledge and resilience children need to prepare them, not only for the next stage in their education, but also for life.
Here at St Mary’s, we also strongly believe that learning doesn’t always take part within the classroom walls, so we have made it a mission of ours to extend learning to as many different places as we can. As an inner-city school we try to utilise all the space we have within the school (for growing, pond-dipping or keeping small animals), as well extending our learning and giving all our children experiences of museums, galleries, nature, adventurous activities, theatres and much, much more.
At St Mary’s we learn our phonics in a fun and active way. We have 20 minutes phonics sessions every day and enhance this further by splitting our EYFS and KS1 classes into smaller groups, so all children can have focused and targeted support to help them achieve their best.
Our phonics is also linked to our Reading scheme in EYFS and KS1, so children have the opportunity to practice the sounds they have learnt in real books, creating a love for reading.
At St Mary’s we know it is important for the children to have an opportunity to discuss and reflect on their thoughts and feelings. Every week we have ‘circle time’. On our smart classroom carpets we provide a chance for everyone to sit in a circle, so that everyone can be seen, and take turns to share and discuss our ideas as a class.
This is our ‘safety circle’, where children have the opportunity to speak openly and honestly, knowing that nothing will go outside the circle. Often we will start with a few games to warm us up, then we follow the circle rules so that everyone has the chance to speak. This leads into a SEAL or PHSE aspect of learning. Each half term the whole school has a new SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) theme. This theme is then linked with a PHSE topic taken from the scheme of work recommended by the Local Authority.
PSHE education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives.
The school was formed as a charity school for poor children in 1710, at a time when only rich children went to school. The pupils were taught in a large room above the west porch of St. Mary’s Church on Upper Street.
