It all starts at The Study. Girls get a head start at The Study, a small, diverse and friendly bilingual school with a strong tradition of innovation established in 1915. Students are welcomed into a nurturing environment with high expectations and plenty of support to achieve their fullest individual potential.
The Study's enriched curriculum coupled with an exceptional bilingual learning environment and a positive atmosphere of mental, physical and emotional balance, nurtures each girl's capacity to be academically successful and well rounded. The breadth and depth of The Study’s curriculum, along with its goal to inspire intellectual curiosity and exploration, is the hallmark of the school experience for each of our students. At The Study, every girl benefits from the care and guidance of teachers who are dedicated to fostering a love of learning, each and every day.
In 1915 a young Englishwoman named Margaret Gascoigne established a small school for six students in the study of her home - the modest but aspiring beginning of what would become known as The Study. In 1960 The Study moved to its present location in Westmount, one of Montreal's prime residential neighbourhoods. In addition to its founder, seven dynamic women have led The Study.
The Study has a proud tradition of providing the finest education for girls from Kindergarten to Grade 11. The environment at The Study is one where students are provided with the programmes, opportunities and resources which enable them to excel. We are an independent bilingual post-secondary preparatory day school with an enriched academic programme, complemented by outstanding arts, design technology and athletics programme. Our objective is to cultivate an active and nurturing learning environment that supports higher order thinking skills and delivers exemplary girls' education through our enriched curriculum and the guiding influence of our exceptional faculty. The Study's approach to education is backed by research that girls in single-gender schools are more academically engaged and confident.
The natural confidence and positivity that exudes from a graduate of The Study is the result of a program that emphasizes the importance of developing leadership skills and qualities from an early age. We’re proud that Study graduates enjoy 100% acceptance into their first choice of post-secondary institution.
Girls have a choice of advanced science and arts courses, including options like Mandarin and Spanish, Biology, Advanced Stagecraft, Introduction to Law and AP Psychology. They learn in French, with classes in subjects such as Géographie, Histoire and Ethique, and they may take advanced placement (AP) exams in French.
Senior School girls also enjoy a wide range of activities such as Debating, Public Speaking, Choir, Environmental Club, Concert Band, cultural excursions and student exchanges with Australia and England. All Senior School students are involved in helping others in the local and wider community, completing 60 hours of community service from grades 9 to 11. Many Senior School girls have travelled to volunteer at our sister school in Nicaragua.
Our priority is to ensure that each girl’s emotional, physical and social needs are met in an environment where academic excellence is fostered. Our holistic approach includes student services, after-school services, clubs & activities, athletics and a supportive community of educators, students and parents.
Developing the passions and curiosity of even our youngest learners. The education of young girls is at the heart of everything we do. We know our girls often make connections naturally in many different ways in order to understand the world around them. Our ever-changing world also motivates all of our teachers to educate and empower our girls while integrating subjects in new and creative ways. We recognize that we all use critical thinking skills every day and how they help us to make good decisions, understand the consequences of our actions and solve problems. As our students become more critical in their thinking, they successfully integrate multiple perspectives to understand complex issues and ideas, helping them strive for excellence.
Interdisciplinary learning focuses learning on life skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. Our Elementary school teachers not only strive for the girls to master subject content but simultaneously encourage curiosity, learning from others, and the development of problem-solving skills. Here at The Study, we observe this approach to teaching and learning as early as Kindergarten, integrating a multitude of subjects in order to develop the passions and curiosity of even our youngest learners.
One of the ways we create an environment in which girls can excel is through our specialized teachers in Elementary School. There is an undeniable link between specialists and girls' results in areas such as the arts, physical education, science and technology, to name just a few examples. Our priority is to ensure that each girl’s emotional, physical and social needs are met in an environment where academic excellence is fostered. Our holistic approach includes students services, after-school services, clubs & activities, athletics and community of educators, students and parents.
