Tromsø International School is the northernmost IB school in the world. We are an authorized IB World School offering the Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. We are a relatively small school, counting 120 students and 25 members of staff for the school year 2018-2019 with 30+ nationalities amongst our student and staff body. Our building is located in Breiviklia, just below the Arctic university, UiT.
We are a close-knit school community, and we proudly call ourselves the TRINT family. Our values are care, curiosity, collaboration and creativity. The administration, teaching staff and students work in an open environment where we all know each other. The school has a full inclusion policy and our goal is for every one of our students to reach their full potential and become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.
Our shared responsibility is to create a safe and good learning environment for all our learners, with the IB Learner Profile as our guideline. Our main teaching language is English, but all our students learn Norwegian and we strive for fluency in both languages. TRINT is now the Northernmost school fully accredited to offer the two programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students in grades 1 – 6 (for students ages 6 – 12 years old) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students in grades 7 – 10 (for students ages 13 – 16).
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed to actively engage students in developmentally appropriate learning activities and to encourage and stimulate development of concepts and skills. An integrated, cross-curricular approach to learning is used.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to make connections between traditional subjects and the real world. It helps them to become critical and reflective thinkers. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. At Tromsø International School we offer PYP for students aged 6 to 12. It prepares students for the intellectual challenges of further education and their future careers, focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
Through the PYP programme we develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.
The programme incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum, asking students to look at six related, trans disciplinary themes and to consider the links between them.
