Tynecastle High School

Tynecastle High School is a six-year comprehensive secondary school which has served west-central Edinburgh with distinction for over 100 years. The school moved to a fantastic new site in January 2010 and has first class educational facilities. The school is thoroughly rooted in its local communities, with learners drawn from Balgreen, Craiglockhart, Dalry, and Stenhouse Primary Schools. The school roll is currently around 630. We are a culturally diverse school and are proud of the fact that we have almost forty languages spoken by our students and staff.

The school offers a wide range of subjects and successfully presents students for SQA exams at all levels. There is a strong sense of pride in the school demonstrated by students, staff and parents/carers. The school has, over many years, successfully supported significant numbers of high attaining students into a wide range of courses at Universities across the UK, as well having a strong record in supporting young people into the world of work. Staff know their students well and a high priority is set by all staff on pastoral care and on ensuring pupils’ welfare. The atmosphere is welcoming and warm with respectful relationships underpinning purposeful learning.

The aim of Curriculum for Excellence is to provide a curriculum which:

• ensures that all learners have the opportunity to acquire the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence through a variety of learning contexts
• ensures that all learners have the opportunity to experience the 4 contexts of the curriculum
• gives young people an understanding of Scotland and its place in the world
• prepares young people for the challenges and issues that face today’s world to enable them to take their place in a modern society and economy
• prepares young people for positive destinations post school

Curriculum for Excellence entitles all young people to:

• a coherent curriculum from 3-18, including a broad general education up to the end of S3
• opportunities to develop skills for learning, for life and for work with a continued focus on literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing
• opportunities to achieve to the highest levels they can through appropriate personal support and challenge
• a senior phase which provides opportunities for study for qualifications and other planned opportunities for developing the four capacities
• opportunities to move into positive and sustained destinations beyond school
