UAE Grade 8 students have ranked fourth globally in science while Grade 4 came in the fifth position among their peers around the world, a renowned international study revealed.

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 is an assessment that is conducted every four years to monitor trends in student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading. More than 64 countries participated in this year’s edition.

Grade 8 students scored 563 points in science versus the global average of 478. Grade 4 students scored 571 compared to the global average of 494, Dubai Government said in a statement.

In Mathematics, students in Grade 4 ranked seventh globally with a score of 564 compared to the global average of 503, and while students in Grade 8 ranked sixth, scoring 561 points compared to the global average of 478.

Students in Indian curriculum schools performed the best, scoring highest across both subjects and grade levels, followed by students in IB schools and UK curriculum schools.

Emirati students in Dubai’s private schools also made significant strides in both mathematics and science, achieving scores above the global average, marking a notable improvement from 2019.

Overall, short-term trend results show greater differences in achievement between boys and girls in TIMSS 2023 compared to TIMSS 2019, particularly in fourth-grade mathematics. The report indicates that there is a clear-cut relationship between home resources, and mathematics and science achievement for fourth- and eighth-grade students internationally.

The release of the TIMSS 2023 International Report and Results took place at the Museum of the Future in Dubai on December 4. It was hosted in partnership with IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) the TIMSS, PIRLS International Study Centre at Boston College, and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Education.

In 2023, 9,500 Grade 4 students from 185 private schools, and 8,500 Grade 8 students from 159 private schools in Dubai participated in the global assessment. A total of 72 education systems globally participated in the latest round of the study.
