Welkom High School

The first English Medium High School on the Goldfields opened on 23 January 1957, with 235 pupils enrolled. The school, consisting of prefab classrooms, was situated where Goudveld Hoerskool now stands. The Welkom airfield was behind the school and the whole area was gravel and dust. The staff included Mr J van Huysteen, Acting Principal, and 15 educators. Physical education comprised being issued with a spade and pick and levelling the dustbowl into a sports field! By the beginning of 1960, the roll stood at 306 learners with classes ranging from Grade 8 to 12.

The school has 34 classrooms of which 15 will be completely interactive by the end of 2011. The school has a library and an audio-visual room. There are three life science-, three physical science-, two computer-, one civil technology- and one consumer studies laboratory. The school has a gym hall and an assembly hall.

The school has two soccer fields, one rugby field, three grass hockey fields, a cricket oval with a five-pitch strip, five cricket practice nets (one indoor, two synthetic and two grass pitches under construction), a grass athletics track, four netball courts, two tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts.

The school has an independent tuck shop as well as a uniform shop on its premises. It also has a boarding facility, the Eddie East Hostel that accommodates 40 girls and 40 boys. The school lets two houses to educators as well as several flats in the hostel.

The school is fully responsible for the safety of learners on the terrain. This does not only refer to sport injuries but also injuries in the classroom and on the grounds during breaks.
