Western Province Preparatory School, situated in the beautiful southern suburbs of Cape Town, is an independent, Anglican Church school with a rich history and tradition, educating boys for over 100 years. We welcome you to join us in our quest to educate our boys to become young men of significance, the solutionaries of tomorrow, men who will be equipped with the values, skills and positive attitude to deal with the challenges facing our world currently and in the years ahead. We awaken potential, empower, and inspire every boy to become a solutionary for our tomorrow.
It was a chance meeting between Trinity Hall Cambridge graduate, Geoffrey Stansbury and Sir Percy Fitzpatrick at a dinner party in 1912 that inspired the young man to visit South Africa. Fitzpatrick had spoken of South Africa as a land of limitless opportunities, and it was not long before Stansbury, armed with £500 and letters of introduction from Fitzpatrick, was on his way. He travelled widely and eventually decided that Cape Town was where he wanted to be. He found Thornton House, a large Victorian property in Kenilworth that was to let. His friend Raymond Hutchinson who shared his ambition to open a prep school soon joined him from England. A letter from the Cape Director of Education in 1913 supported and encouraged their venture.
WPPS is a leading independent Anglican school for boys, committed to all-round educational excellence within an innovative learning environment. By embracing diversity and providing a dynamic, balanced and holistic curriculum, we:
At WPPS we have two classes in Grade N (00), for boys who turn five years old, and two classes in Grade R (0), for boys turning six years old. In each of our Pre-Prep classes, we have the invaluable support of a classroom assistant. The boys enjoy their own fun-filled and well-equipped playground, which encourages confidence, gross motor development and immeasurable social interaction. Emphasis is placed on having fun while learning, within a happy, safe and secure environment. We use creative activities, music, and educational games not only to adequately prepare our boys for the more formal learning environment of Grade 1, but also to best prepare them for life.
The Junior Prep provides an enriching environment with a teaching philosophy that encourages the boys to explore, create, interact, and discover in a positive setting. In each of our Junior Prep classes, we have the invaluable support of an intern. This allows for closer connections between boys and their teachers as well as an additional pair of hands to help make the day calm and happy.
In our Senior Prep (Grades 4 – 7), high academic standards are maintained across our broad-based curriculum. We continue to develop independent and critical thinking skills. We offer specialist subject teaching in Grades 6 and 7, affording our boys the opportunity to prepare for high school education. Where appropriate, technology is used to support and enrich our teaching; we aim to use technology to transform the learning experiences for our boys. We live in a world where knowledge is easily accessible; our challenge is to educate our boys to interpret this information.
Our curriculum is constantly changing as we endeavour to create a curriculum that is relevant and rooted in real world problems.
Project-based learning is embraced in Grades 4 – 7; this involves a dynamic classroom approach which is believed to allow boys to acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real world challenges. The boys learn about a subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. It is a style of active learning and inquiry-based learning.
We offer an extensive extracurricular programme, which includes a variety of sports as well as cultural activities. Extracurricular activities often keep our boys afloat with purpose and positive self-esteem. Through these, our boys also learn important skills such as leadership, time management, discipline, teamwork, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
WPPS appreciates the services of a multi-disciplinary support team; the team operates in a private capacity. Consultant occupational and speech therapists have rooms on the Eden Road Campus, and our pupil support department offers remedial assistance to boys who are experiencing academic difficulties. Our counselling department provides pastoral care to boys and families, and teachers refer boys encountering emotional and social problems.
