I am a Korean-American educator, having started my career as a high school English teacher in Northen California back in 1998. Since then, I’ve lived at worked in five different countries (US, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand), across various school types, including independent and international schools, ranging from US common core to IB schools, a total of 8 schools with leadership positions ranging from principalships to head of school. I hold a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, master’s from Kings College London, and a bachelors in English and Political Science from UCLA.
Our focus at XCL American School of Bangkok is to prioritize academic excellence and character education, specifically on resilience, as well as continue to promote our school community that is truly multicultural—ASB: Achieve, Strive, and Belong!
We run curriculum review cycle, together with a comprehensive student achievement data, to narrow down our focus by division. This year, we are focusing on literacy across the school.
One significant challenge will be navigating the rapid integration of technology while maintaining a balance between digital and traditional methods of learning. Additionally, addressing the diverse needs of global learners, ensuring equity in education, and preparing students for careers that may not yet exist will be key hurdles. Adapting to these changes while fostering critical thinking and emotional intelligence will be essential.
At XCL American School of Bangkok, we prioritize a truly personalized approach to education. By incorporating project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and opportunities for hands-on exploration, we engage students in meaningful ways. Teachers cultivate relationships to understand individual challenges and interests, fostering a supportive environment where all students can thrive.
XCL ASB celebrates cultural diversity and inclusivity as core values. With programs tailored for English Language Learners (ELLs) and differentiated teaching practices, XCL ASB ensures that all students, regardless of background, feel valued and supported. Regular workshops and initiatives promote acceptance and understanding among students and staff.
XCL ASB is committed to student well-being, with robust counseling services and proactive measures to address bullying. Regular workshops on emotional resilience, peer mediation programs, and open channels for reporting issues contribute to a safe and supportive school environment.
The school emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability through its curriculum. Programs in leadership and entrepreneurship prepare students for real-world challenges. Soft skills like communication, time management, and cultural awareness are also integrated into daily learning.
Parents and the wider community are key partners in the school’s success. XCL ASB encourages active participation through parent-teacher associations (e.g., Booster Club, Room Parents, Parent Advisory Committee), regular communication, and community events. Feedback loops and collaborations with local organizations further enrich the school experience. We also partner with 16 embassies in Thailand with over 90 students from these embassy partners with whom we promote multiculturalism at ASB.
A culture of professional growth, recognition, and collaboration ensures that talented educators want to join and remain at XCL ASB. Ongoing training, mentoring programs, and opportunities to contribute to curriculum development make teaching at the school both rewarding and impactful.
Yes, XCL ASB invests in teacher development, providing pathways for leadership through mentorship, and teacher leadership roles. Teachers are encouraged to take on responsibilities that align with their strengths and aspirations.
Student-led activities and the Model United Nations (MUN) program is particularly impactful, as it develops skills in public speaking, diplomacy, and critical thinking. These attributes are invaluable for future academic and professional endeavors.
Success is seeing every student leave the school equipped not just with academic knowledge but with the confidence, empathy, and skills to make a meaningful impact on the world.
