Why Empathy Matters: Dr. Michael Allen on Leadership, Education & The Great Gatsby

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Dr. Michael Allen, the Acting Vice President at Zayed University, to discuss his vision for the institution and the exciting initiatives underway to prepare students for a rapidly evolving global landscape.

1. What is your vision for the university’s future, and how do you plan to achieve it in the next five years?

Our vision is to graduate Emiratis who contribute meaningfully to society and thrive in the modern workforce. As a federal institution with a predominantly young Emirati student body, our strategic approach is aligned with the national mission and the objectives of the Ministry of Education.

To achieve this, we have introduced a wide range of innovative programs and initiatives designed to ensure our students are equipped with real-world skills. One example is our new First Year Experience program, which is designed to develop foundational competencies such as communication and digital literacy. This best-in-class program smooths the transition from high school to university while laying the groundwork for future career success.

2. How is the university adapting to the challenges of digital learning and integrating new technologies into education?

We are embracing the transformative potential of AI across all disciplines. Every student, regardless of their major, will need to understand and work with AI in their future careers. That’s why, starting this academic year, we are launching a university-wide initiative to integrate AI into all academic programs.

We are also introducing a certified AI literacy program for students, faculty, and staff. This will be instrumental in fostering a culture of innovation. Faculty are central to this transformation, and we are supporting them in becoming champions of change. We are also forging partnerships with local and global institutions to ensure we are informed by best practices and co-creating a robust framework for AI in education.

3. What strategies are you implementing to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion across campus?

We are especially proud of our long-standing Student Accessibility Services (SAS) program, which supports Students of Determination through a holistic, inclusive approach. From academic and technical support to tailored learning materials, our goal is to ensure all students can thrive.

Our faculty and staff represent a rich tapestry of nationalities, reflecting the UAE’s global outlook. This diversity not only enhances classroom discussions but also prepares students to work in multicultural environments. It is part of our broader mission to cultivate empathy, inclusion, and global awareness in everything we do.

4. What role do you see the university playing in addressing global issues like climate change or public health?

Universities must equip students with the knowledge and confidence to tackle global challenges. When the UAE hosted COP28, we sponsored an immersive simulation exercise that allowed students to experience the dynamics of global climate negotiations first-hand.

Interdisciplinary thinking is key. Our College of Interdisciplinary Studies equips students with both the broad perspective and the skills required to tackle complex challenges.

We are also strengthening our research culture to ensure our work aligns with both national goals and pressing global issues.

5. How are you fostering partnerships with industry to enhance job opportunities for students?

Partnerships with industry are essential for bridging the gap between education and employment. Our First Year Experience connects students early with employers through real-world challenges. Our academic colleges also maintain strong ties with industry, regularly bringing in guest speakers and organizing workshops.

Our Career Fairs – which take place every semester – are especially popular, with strong interest from companies keen to engage with young Emirati talent. These partnerships are a win-win for our students, the university, and the industries we serve.

6. What steps is the university taking to support student mental health and well-being?

Student well-being is one of our top priorities. The pressures facing today’s students are significant, and we are committed to providing robust support systems through our well-established Student Counselling Centre. The Center offers confidential individual counselling, emergency support, and university-wide initiatives that promote mental wellness and resilience.

Our goal is to support students not just academically but holistically – helping them overcome personal challenges, develop problem-solving skills, and reach their full potential.

7. How do you plan to attract and retain top faculty in a competitive academic environment?

We are proud to have an exceptional faculty, and we’re committed to making Zayed University a great place to work. The UAE is a uniquely attractive location, and we’ve recently introduced new initiatives to support faculty work-life balance.

We are also investing significantly in research opportunities. While we will always be a student-first university, we are on a clear path to becoming more research-intensive, with a focus on producing work that delivers measurable societal value. Our faculty play a vital role in this transformation.

8. How is the university leveraging alumni networks to support current students and recent graduates?

Our alumni are highly valued, and we work hard to maintain strong, lifelong connections. From popular events like our Ramadan Suhoor to career mentorship and outreach projects, we empower alumni to stay engaged with the university.

We are particularly proud of those alumni who return to campus to represent their companies at Career Fairs or serve as mentors. These initiatives ensure that our graduates continue to play an active role in shaping the ZU experience for future generations.

9. If you could share one motivational quote on a highway billboard, what would it say?

The Great Gatsby is one of my favourite books, and I have this quote framed in my office:

“Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

It reminds me daily of the importance of empathy and I think it’s a valuable lesson for everyone.
