This scholarship is designed to support talented student athletes as they develop their sporting abilities and continue their academic studies and foster success in international competitions.

The scholarships can be used for a range of support services which will assist you and your sporting development. The scholarships are funded by the Scottish Funding Council and managed by the University of Stirling.

Winning Students scholarships are awarded annually and can value up to £6,000 per annum, providing tailored support and academic flexibility. Scholarships are available to full-time and part-time students at college or university and to able-bodied and disability athletes.

Scholarship funding can be spent on a number of support services from student accommodation to competition fees and sports equipment.

We work closely with Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport and with the sportscotland institute of sport to ensure this funding complements existing support.

In our core sports, athletes are nominated for support by their governing body, whilst Individual Scholarships offer athletes in other sports the chance to receive support.

Once an athlete is nominated, their selection is verified by the relevant institution and Winning Students team. Scholarship values are agreed by programme partners in line with performance development plans.

The nomination process

  • Students who compete in a Winning Students core sport are nominated directly by their sport's governing body. Select your core sport for sport-specific information and contact the Performance representative for more details. Nominated athletes will be invited to complete and return the full selection paperwork.
  • Individual Scholarship nominations - open to athletes in non core sports - can be submitted by the athlete, sports governing body or by a college or university representative to be considered for support. See the Individual Scholarships section for more details on how to apply. Individual Scholarship applications for 2020/21 are currently unavailable due to ongoing discussions around programme funding.
  • Nominated athletes are then ratified by the University of Stirling as Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence against the full selection criteria.
  • Selected athletes are officially confirmed each October and can support until the end of the academic year in June.

Eligibility

  • You must have a British passport and be able to represent either Great Britain or Scotland

  • You should be aged 16 to 28 for able-bodied athletes or aged 16 to 35 for disability athletes though scholarship upper age limits are flexible
