Xi'an International School

Xi’an International School (XIS) operates under an American based curriculum for students Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Elementary students mathematics instruction consists of Singapore based math curriculum. Grades  mathematics classes are challenging and foundational in developing skill and proficiency. All XIS students have many opportunities to develop language skills through various forms of reading, writing, and speaking. As students become more independent, they learn effective methods of developing content knowledge and applying their understanding to the world around them.

Xi’an International School (XIS) was founded in March 1997 with the help of the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Education. The school was formally granted license to operate by the State Ministry of Education in Beijing.

XIS is an internationally diverse, American based school. XIS teachers approach education with professionalism and creativity, allowing for a broad range of teaching styles, activities, and individual learning experiences.

XIS facilities consist of a total 13 classrooms, including labs, an art room, a wood workshop, one computer lab, an indoor gym and athletic office, library, and shared access to school auditorium and sports fields. As XIS demographics and student population continue to change, there are opportunities for further development and growth.

Academic Process
First, a family will submit an application form through XIS website. Second, each new family will take part in an interview with the purpose of giving the family and the school the opportunity to get to know one another. Third, applying students are required to take benchmark tests in both mathematics and English language arts to determine current academic levels. Finally, all students who apply for admission are required to have a high standard of English language proficiency before enrollment. Students applying for admission will be given a language proficiency test if he or she is not a native English speaker. Placement is determined by an Admissions Committee.

XIS’s curriculum includes the following: Language Arts (oral expression, spelling, grammar, handwriting, phonics, writing, reading, and literature), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies (history, geography, economics, government, and sociology), Chinese Language (Marco Polo), Fine Arts (music, art, and drama), Physical Education, and selected electives.

Xi’an International School’s 14 grade levels are based on the American Grading System. Home schooling students must provide a portfolio of work, course descriptions (which include percentage of book completed; book title, publisher, and copyright), and grades. Realizing that each student is a unique learner, teachers create an academically rich environment that addresses differentiated learning styles.

Being a smaller school, we are able to work with each student, so that he or she can reach full potential. Our goal is to ensure that school is not only a place to learn but is also a place where students can discover how to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to their lives. To do this we willingly work with parents and tutors to provide individualized support for each student. Working together, we create a stable base of knowledge on which further learning is built.
