A Year 12 student at The British International School Abu Dhabi has achieved a notable milestone in secondary‑level STEM education by publishing a literature review in the International Journal of Scientific Research (IJSR), a globally recognised peer‑reviewed journal.
Tanvi’s paper, “The Microbiota–Gut–Brain Axis in Mental Health and Neurodegeneration: Mechanisms, Evidence, and Therapeutic Implications,” explores emerging scientific research into the complex relationship between gut microbiota, brain function, mental health, and neurological conditions. The topic sits at the intersection of biology, neuroscience and medical science, reflecting an advanced level of interdisciplinary inquiry.
Publishing in an international, peer‑reviewed journal is uncommon for school‑aged students and requires a high standard of academic writing, synthesis of scientific evidence, and critical analysis. Tanvi’s work was accepted following a rigorous editorial and review process, highlighting both the quality and originality of her research.
The project was undertaken independently and extended well beyond curriculum requirements. While studying Biology, Tanvi became increasingly interested in neuroscience and gut microbiology through reading scientific literature and academic journals. Rather than conducting an experimental study, she chose to complete a comprehensive literature review, a demanding academic task that involves evaluating and integrating findings from multiple peer‑reviewed sources.
Completing the research alongside her school studies required sustained commitment, time management and resilience. The process also helped develop essential STEM skills, including academic research methods, scientific writing, data interpretation and critical thinking.
The experience has further shaped Tanvi’s future ambitions in medicine and scientific research, deepening her interest in neuroscience and reinforcing her desire to pursue a career in the medical field. Early exposure to academic publishing has given her valuable insight into the expectations and standards of professional scientific inquiry.
In recognition of her achievement, Tanvi received a Headteacher’s Commendation Award for academic excellence. Her publication stands as a strong example of what motivated secondary school students can achieve when curiosity, discipline and scientific ambition are combined.
