The main aim of our enthusiastic and committed staff is to ensure the progress and development of all our pupils and to establish firm educational foundations which will support life-long learning. Here at Glantaf, we place emphasis on the welfare of the individual and the development of skills within a learning environment typified by self-respect and respect for others.

Motivating pupils to fulfil their potential requires us to provide a variety of opportunities, to recognise achievement and promote both the talents and curiosity of the individual. We aim to foster a sense of pride in our unique Welsh culture and language together with the confidence to contribute positively to the school and wider community.

A close partnership between members of the school community is essential in order to ensure high standards and coherent support for all our pupils. To offer a comprehensive education, equal opportunities, and enriching experiences through the medium of Welsh and within the context of a supportive and intrinsically Welsh ethos

  • To nurture the individual’s personality by offering experiences and opportunities that will promote cognitive, physical and spiritual development and broaden horizons
  • To assist every pupil to adopt balanced attitudes, learn skills, gather information, and deepen understanding. These will be relevant to their lives after leaving school, in the workplace, and in their leisure time, in a fast-changing world.
  • To engender in every pupil a pride in their roots, respect for their language and loyalty to the society to which they belong, nurturing a strong sense of citizenship for Wales and the world
  • To give the students’ natural inquisitiveness an opportunity to develop an alert and questioning mind, and the ability to engage in logical argument, to arrive at balanced views, and to make independent decisions
  • To ensure that each pupil develops the ability to communicate effectively, primarily through the medium of Welsh, by engaging in a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities
  • To encourage pupils to participate with enthusiasm to the best of their ability in a responsible and self-disciplined way
  • To encourage respect for others, for religious, spiritual, moral and cultural values and develop tolerance towards alternative beliefs and attitudes,
  • To help the pupil appreciate human achievements and aspirations over the centuries
  • To prepare pupils to serve and make a positive contribution to society and become good citizens
  • To educate pupils and develop the abilities of staff in an open, welcoming school, which cares for each individual and fosters a constructive relationship with all partners in their education

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf was opened in September 1978 with 99 pupils on roll. Mr J.E. Malcolm Thomas, its first headmaster was assisted by a team of 10 teachers who divided their time between the new Welsh school and its English counterpart on the same site.

The school increased in numbers to such an extent that in September 1986 the lower school (Years 7 and 8 ) was moved to the old Cantonian High School site at Waterhall, Fairwater under the leadership of Mrs Marian Wynne. Another important development during this period was the establishment of a Special Resource Base at the school. Yet another change occurred in 1998, when the school, once again, occupied the main site on the banks of the Taff in Llandaff North. Ysgol Gyfun Gymrag Plasmawr was then opened on the lower school site receiving a number of pupils from years 7 and 8.
