Job Summary
We are looking forward to recruit for the position of “Research Computing Manager” in Abu Dhabi.
Purpose:
- To oversee the operation and continuous improvement of specialized computing facilities that support research programs at the Institute;
- To plan and manage financial resources to support the development and operation of research computing at the Institute;
- To keep abreast of recent developments in computing in order to develop research computing capabilities into a world-class facility that supports high-quality research and attracts external interest and engagement;
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development, implementation and review of policies and procedures applicable to research computing, including, but not limited to user access, system security, license management, and user fees/charge-back accounting.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of technical support staff, while ensuring their effective support for the faculty and research staff in research and teaching.
- Prepare the annual budget requests for research computing and supervise the expenditures.
- Work closely with researchers at all levels to understand their computational requirements and to provide consultancy on how research computing could contribute in addressing those requirements..
- Develop awareness and training programs with regards to research computing techniques and facilities.
- Advise on the effective use of the research computing facilities and applications.
- Liaise with senior members of research teams to discuss issues and implement service improvements.
- Work closely with ICT sections with regards to the overall design, development, maintenance and support of the overall research computing back-end systems.
- Explore possibility of collaborating with or using external research computing facilities.
- Formulate and implement short and long-range goals for the operation and improvement of research computing; set priorities, assign responsibilities, and establish timetables. Project future needs and formulate strategies consistent with projections.
- Meet with subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards.
Required Skills
- Strong technical knowledge of research computing system architecture, hardware components and software stack;
- Experienced with parallel programing paradigms (such as OpenMP, MPI), numerical libraries and technical computing environment such as Matlab.
- Familiar with faculty computing resource issues and some common applications used for simulation and optimization.
- Strong administrative and management skills, with the ability to effectively lead, motivate and fairly evaluate staff;
- Experience in planning and managing budgets for laboratory operation;
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment and serve constructively on committees;
- The successful candidate should have at least five years of professional experience working in research computing in a research-focused organization.
- Teamwork and communication: ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with researchers at all levels.
- A graduate degree in Engineering or clearly demonstrated technical experience and qualifications.
