Job Summary
The School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) at The University of Queensland is a distinguished multidisciplinary school for research and teaching that encompasses the traditional academic disciplines of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Microbiology.

The school is now looking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior lecturer/Associate Professor in the
area of biochemistry, specifically in mammalian metabolism and preferably related to health
and disease to build on its research strengths in molecular bio-sciences and to contribute to
its undergraduate and postgraduate biochemistry teaching program in metabolism.

Primary Purpose of Position

  • Establish a research program in biochemistry with a metabolic focus, preferably
    related to mammalian systems, including the publication of scholarly papers in highly
    regarded peer-reviewed journals and attracting external competitive research funds.
  • Engage in and develop high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education in the
    School’s biochemistry courses, specifically in the area of metabolism as relates to
    health and disease.
  • Perform other activities associated with the discipline, School, Faculty and University
    as required.

Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research

  • Develop and maintain a research program supported by external funding
  • Conduct research and publish scholarly papers
  • Grow a national and international research profile
  • Develop productive collaborative research links within SCMB, and UQ and outside of
    the University
  • Engage with industry relevant to the area of research

Teaching

  • Teach in the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses in metabolism, cell
    and molecular biology
  • Develop and enhance course material in these areas
  • Coordinate courses in these areas
  • Contribute to the supervision of honours and postgraduate research students
    Engagement
  • Contribute to the scholarly life of the school by actively contributing to committee and
    other service activities.
  • Engage with relevant external professional bodies including professional societies, grant funding bodies, journals, schools and industry.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor

Other
Ensure you are aware of and comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the
duties undertaken, including:

  • The University’s Code of Conduct
  • Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation
    and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or
    Institute/School
  • The adoption sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with
    associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and
    procedures
  • Requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University Organisational Relationships.
  • The position reports to the Head of School.

Remuneration

  • This is a full-time, continuing appointment at Academic level B, C or D (dependent on knowledge, skills and experience).

Selection Criteria

  • PhD and postdoctoral training in biochemistry, particularly as it relates to mammalian
    systems
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of biochemistry, particularly as it relates to
    mammalian systems
  • Demonstrated research excellence in one of the School’s research strengths, in an
    area that will enable productive collaborations with other academics in the School
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with other researchers,
    professional bodies, government or industry
  • Demonstrated excellence in University teaching, as evidenced by teaching evaluations and learning outcomes.
  • Experience in mammalian metabolic biochemistry in health and disease,
  • A record of outstanding achievement, relative to opportunity, in biochemistry/molecular biology research, as evidenced by competitive research income and high quality publication outcomes.
  • An established record of excellent teaching in biochemistry, as evidenced by undergraduate teaching experience and /or research student supervisory experience and associated outcomes
  • High level communication skills
  • A passion for academic activities including research, teaching and engagement

Desirable
Academic or peer review committee experience.
A research focus in metabolic biochemistry, particularly relating to immune metabolism, cancer, inflammation or the role of the microbiome in health and disease.

Qualification Verification
An appointment to this position is subject to the verification of the highest academic
qualification from the conferring institution.
