The Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics, du Bâtiment et de l’Industrie (ESTP) was founded in 1891 as a private higher education institution, officially recognized by the State in 1921 and granted the status of "General Interest" (EESPIG) by the French Government. The ESTP is accreditated to award the engineering degree “diplôme d’ingénieur” by national authority “Commission des Titres d’Ingénieurs”.

In France, the ESTP has the biggest student flow for the construction industry and has made its reputation as THE “Grande Ecole” for professionals in this area, in all its aspects: design, planning & development, construction, project management, rehabilitation, maintenance, facilities & real estate management, …with an emphasis on sustainable development, new materials, energy efficiency, health issues, saving of natural resources. In a globalized world, higher education institutions have to be aware of the increasingly rapid economic and cultural changes and have to adapt constantly. The ESTP, a leading Civil Engineering higher education institution, takes up this challenge and offers innovative and dynamic programmes in response to the needs of industry and society.

Today, the ESTP is the French institution that trains the largest number of students for the construction industry in all fields: design, construction, planning & development, project & facilities management, sustainable buildings & infrastructures, rehabilitation, maintenance, new materials, energy efficiency. Its expertise ranges from degree awarding programmes (at all levels of higher education, from 2 year technician courses to PhDs) to adult education and intensive sessions of French as a foreign language.

One of the main characteristics of the ESTP is its close relationship to industry; many renowned companies are its active partners. This privileged partnership is confirmed on a daily basis by a large offer of internships, sponsoring of events, scholarships for students, participation in ESTP boards, … These links are strengthened by the 1.400 adults who participate each year in a continuing education programme and by the 18.000 alumni of the engineering degree course who are practicing professionals and may be found in small, medium and big sized construction companies all over the world.

All these achievements are consolidated by the development of new projects: highly conscious of the need to further increase efficiency in a changing and competitive sector, the ESTP is currently undergoing a thorough internal administrative re-organization; it has very recently become the owner of its campus in Cachan and will work on a short term basis on the extension and rehabilitation of the existing buildings. On a long term level, the strategic development of the ESTP will be focused on the constant updating of all its training programmes, the development of research and innovation activities and a strengthening of its international relations policy.

In order to achieve these ambitious goals, the ESTP will of course rely on its privileged partners, in France: companies; its higher education partner institutions; the Research and Higher Education Cluster (COMUE) “Université Paris Est” and abroad: its network of high level partner universities. Together, we will make sure that ESTP remains the leading teaching institution for the construction industry.

The ESTP is one of the French “Grandes Ecoles”, which are the leading institutions for French engineering and management education. The “Grandes Ecoles” are distinguished by a highly selective admission process, a limited number of students and quality programmes.

In France, the title of “engineer” and the professional habilitation that goes with it, is awarded with the 5 year degree “diplôme d’ingénieur –master’s degree”. There is no intermediate "bachelor degree" conferring the title of engineer.

Studies are normally accomplished in a “Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs”. The engineering degree programmes are reviewed and accredited every 6 years by national authority “Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur” (CTI).

Institutions habilitated by CTI to award engineering degrees assemble in the “Conférence des Directeurs des Ecoles Françaises d’Ingénieurs” (CDEFI). Many of engineering and management "Grandes Ecoles" are members of the “Conférence des Grandes Ecoles” (CGE). The ESTP Paris belongs to the private "Grandes Ecoles" that are members of the "Union des Grandes Ecoles Indépendantes" (UGEI).
