At McMaster, the Faculty of Engineering offers all undergraduate engineering students a common first year, Engineering I. This gives students a full academic year to learn about all the engineering focus disciplines McMaster has to offer.
By March of first year, students are well-positioned to make an informed decision and select their preferred engineering disciplines to pursue in upper levels. Applicants with a strong admission average may be offered “Free Choice.” This guarantees a choice of Level II program (dependent upon successful completion of Level I Engineering). Please note: “Free Choice” does not apply to our Chemical and Bioengineering, Engineering and Management, or Engineering and Society programs.
In first year, Engineering I students typically take up to two approved complementary elective courses, offered by other faculties. These electives often relate to an individual’s strengths and interests in other areas such as philosophy, music, languages, social sciences and history.

At the end of Engineering I, students select one of the following disciplines:
Students may also choose one of the five-year program options such as Engineering & Management or Engineering & Society. These unique programs have received wide recognition for the value they add to a core Bachelor of Engineering undergraduate degree.
Students with a minimum admissions average of mid-90s may qualify for guaranteed choice of discipline in second year and beyond, dependent on successful completion of first year Engineering. This does not apply to Chemical Engineering & Bioengineering or Management or Society 5 year program options.
