Certificate in Education
Completion of this programme will provide you with an initial teacher training qualification for the post-compulsory and training sector. It is ideal if you wish to teach in the lifelong learning sector, such as a further education college, sixth form, adult and community education setting or training in the workplace. You will gain the essential skills and knowledge to enable you to teach and will study an overview of educational theory, in addition to the wider issues affecting the education and training sector. You will also gain practical skills in an education or training environment through your teaching practice.
This programme aims to explore the roles and responsibilities of teachers, trainers and tutors practising in the Lifelong Learning sector and to evaluate your own position in this. Develop your planning, learning, teaching and assessment strategies for groups of learners and individual learners.
Develop the skills of reflective practice to continually improve your own learning and practice.Encourage you to assess own levels of key skills and plan for future improvement via the development of an individual learning plan.
Give you the opportunity to engage with fellow subject specialist peers to create innovative resources to share across the partnership. Explore and respond to issues associated with inclusive practice. Explore the concept of continuing professional development and to evaluate the importance of this for teachers, trainers and tutors who are in the full teaching role and who are practising in the Lifelong Learning sector. Explore issues associated with wider professional practice, such as quality assurance systems and procedures and quality improvement. Explore the role of being a professional within the sector.
At Level 4, you will study Introduction to Education and Training, Policies, Theories and Research in Learning and Teaching. At Level 5, you will study Pedagogy in the Specialist Subject. Preparing for Professional Practice, Curriculum Design and Policy and Perception in Education.
You will develop an individual learning plan to help plan and monitor own performance both academic and teaching practice skills. You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods that include:
You will be invited to attend an interview at the College with a member of the Education team. Please bring your certificates for all relevant qualifications, including GCSE English.
To gain access to this course, you will Be employed or volunteer as a full or part-time teacher in post-16 education or training (a part-time teacher will be expected to have a regular teaching commitment of 40 hours in Year 1 and 60 hours in Year 2). Hold a recognised qualification relevant to the subject of your teaching area at Level 3 or above. Have achieved GCSE English at grade C or above, or equivalent. Be working at a minimum of Level 2 in written and spoken English. Hold a clear DBS. Attend a successful interview.
If you have previously studied on a similar award and have gained higher education credit at an equivalent level from a relevant qualification, it may be possible to take this into account to gain exemptions from one or more modules.
