Helicopters play a major role in the offshore environment. Without the knowledge of some of the hazards helicopter operations could be deadly. This course is designed to equip the delegate with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to perform the role of an Offshore Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) safely and effectively.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of pre-planning for and the main elements of the response requirement for a range of helideck and helicopter emergencies
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of both the HLO and the Helideck safety during a helicopter-related emergency
  • Understanding the human factors issues during emergencies and how to manage them
  • Understand meteorological requirements for offshore helicopter operations.
  • Learn personal responsibilities and procedures associated with helicopter safety and transportation
  • Learn how to properly and safely direct the boarding/exiting a helicopter
  • Learn the proper in-flight safety practices
  • Learn required safety/firefighting equipment and procedures
  • To provide Helicopter Landing Officers with the knowledge, skills and procedures to safely and efficiently coordinate offshore helicopter operations

Maintain a state of readiness

  • Identify and locate helicopter operational hazards, hazardous areas, access routes and points
  • Identify, locate and operate all relevant equipment and controls

Day 2
Prepare for emergencies

  • Respond to appropriate alarms
  • Prepare for helicopter landing
  • Prepare to enter the incident area
  • General Actions in case of an Aircraft Accident
  • Control the rescue of personnel
  • Control non-firefighting operations
  • Evacuating the Aircraft
  • Emergency Survival Kit Items
  • Preparing to Depart the Helicopter after Landing Offshore
  • Departing the Helicopter
  • HLO responsibilities during helicopter landing and departure

Day 3
Control the response to emergencies

  • Supervision of passengers and cargo handling
  • Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (DGbA) Awareness
  • HLO Normally Unattended Installations
