With over $800 million in annual research expenditures, Penn State ranks among the top 20 U.S. research universities, and is one of only two institutions in the nation accorded land grant, sea grant, sun grant, and space grant status.
As Pennsylvania's only land-grant university, Penn State has a broad mission of teaching, research, and public service. But that mission was not so grandly conceived in 1855, when the Commonwealth chartered it as one of the nation's first colleges of agricultural science, with a goal to apply scientific principles to farming.
Centre County became the site of the new college in response to a gift of 200 acres from gentleman farmer and ironmaster James Irvin of Bellefonte. Founding President Evan Pugh drew on the scientific education he had received in Europe to plan a curriculum that combined theoretical studies with practical applications.
Pugh and similar visionaries in other states championed Congressional passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Act in 1862. The act enabled states to sell federal land, invest the proceeds, and use the income to support colleges "where the leading object shall be, without excluding scientific and classical studies ... to teach agriculture and the mechanic arts [engineering] ... in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in all the pursuits and professions of life." The state legislature designated Penn State the land-grant institution of Pennsylvania.

Penn State university is one of the best schools ever! I study English there and the faculty are very approachable and people will say how if you go to Penn State you will have large classes that is not true at all. I had classes that had 20 people in them for my major. I did have a few gen education classes that were large like a film class but I did not care about that, and even in very large classes you can approach professors/instructors and talk to them. There's also time for an active social life, and yes you can be an excellent student and have a good social life I did and so did lots of people I know.

Best university in the world! The university is among the top 15 best public schools in the nation and one of the top 100 schools in the world. Gorgeous campus, beautiful setting, great social life, and powerful degree. I would not second-guess my decision to come here for nothing.

I had described my experience at Penn State upon graduating as the best 4 years of my life. Of course, many new life experiences have happened but I still look back and think highly of my time there. I met wonderful people, got a quality education, and developed into who I am today. I grew up a lot in those 4 years.
I went to New York University for my Master's degree and, 95% of what I was exposed to there, I had already learned at Penn State. I believe Penn State is stronger academically than NYU. I hope people realize that Penn State is not just a football school. It is a top-notch academic institution. If given the chance again, I would choose PSU without hesitation.

Penn State was an amazing experience. I learned so much and lived life to the fullest while there. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially people in the education field. The Special Education program was small and everyone was very approachable.

Penn State was a great choice for me because it had top notch engineering, great football, and lots to do outside of class. I probably would have had a great time if I went to any big school, but Penn State has been a blast. The one thing I would say is that you have to be proactive here or else you will become just a number. But it is easy to be proactive when there is so many ways to get the most out of this school.
