In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi, moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University’s first president. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender.

Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher normal schools, and despite opposition from the government at that time, became Japan’s first university to admit female students in 1913.

The ancient castle grounds of Sendai's famous feudal war lord Masamune Date, are home to the majority of Tohoku University's facilities. In addition to the five main campuses is the new Aobayama campus on Aobayama mountain surrounded by beautiful fir forests native to the region's hilly terrain.

The primeval forest served as a natural fortress for Sendai castle, which was built in 1602. It was protected under the strict supervision of the Sendai clan. This protection continued under the auspices of the national military following the Meiji Restoration in 1868. When World War 2 ended in 1945, the area was home to a military base of the occupation forces. It remained off limits to civilians for many years.

The Tohoku University Botanical Gardens, was founded for research and education on Aobayama mountain, in 1958. Due to its preservation for 400 years it is now home to flora and fauna of priceless academic value. In 1972, the garden was designated a natural monument, a first for a national university botanical garden. It is one of only three national university botanical gardens in Japan.

Today, Aobayama's 400 year history of natural beauty endures next door to the thriving metropolis of Sendai city, home to more than one million people.

In the more than 100 years since Tohoku University was founded in 1907, the constant goal has been to become one of the world's great research universities.

As the 21st President of this university I pledge to continue this pursuit of international excellence in education. We take great pride in the past successes of our students and faculty. Their innovations in science and engineering have helped make the world a better place in which to live.

We learned through the 3-11 disaster that there is so much more we can do to develop new technologies to make the entire world safer and more environmentally friendly. At the same time, while medical support is critical in the aftermath of a disaster, we also know that the arts give us the medium of expression in which to heal the human heart. Thus at Tohoku University we are committed to graduating students with a well rounded, complete education.

The dedicated faculty at this university have ignited my child's passion for learning, and the remarkable progress she has made speaks volumes about the quality of education offered here.

In the winter of 2015, i went to tohoku university as a short-term student and experienced a good study program for 2 weeks. Now I went to Japan again. One day I would like to go to sendai and tohoku university.

Came here for a short walk as a tourist. This Uni trumps my home Uni in Singapore (not gonna name which) in terms of scenery and nature. Buildings are designed nicely and there are trees lining every street. We stopped by a cafe to get from delicious bread and coffee. I'm not sure how the curriculum is like but I'm pretty sure that I would've loved to do an exchange here.

The first university to accept foreign and women students. Great spot for cherry blossoms in early-mid April.

In the paper and advertisement, this university look very good. When I decided to take courses here because of the advertisement of "Course which is fully taught in English". However, the definition of "Fully taught in English" is different from reality. Some classes are good, but some are not. Some classes said will be taught in English, but it is not. Some classes have only English power point, but instructor taught in Japanese. I cannot see the potential for this university to become international if this issue is not being addressed. Student management and support is not very helpful for international student too. If you come here as an exchange student, you will enjoy it for couples of month. If you decided to take a full course here, I do not really recommended this university. However, if you fully understand Japanese and you are planning to work and live in Japan, this university is good enough

To be honest, engineering course in Tohoku University is not so well designed. The poor arrangement by putting third-year undergrad course on the first year course schedule was really confusing and beyond our level at that time. The classes supposed to be taught in English sometimes are completely in Japanese. The undergraduate class contents sometimes can be surprisingly shallow and meaningless, as attendance is the most important thing in this university not understanding. One of few things good here is that I don't have to pay my tuition fee. But on the other hand, the promising statement of "a lot of opportunities to get scholarship" is just disappointing. To sustain yourself in this university, you NEED money in your bank account to prepare what's gonna happen next. I guess Tohoku University is a good one in Japan, as it indeed in the engineering and science society in Japan. However, internationalization in this university is still in progress and I would say not even mature enough. At this moment, I would say I will not even think about working or continuing my graduate study here in Sendai nor Japan. Life is tough here people, get ready and think carefully before you come here. Good luck to you and me.
